The history of the Premier League, as with Division 1 in the two decades that preceded it, is that the team with the best defence almost always wins it. Most certainly the team with the 5th/6th best defence never wins it iirc.
Pretty sure we had the best defensive record every season under Mancini yet only won the league once.

That's a fair point and one I hadn't thought through, clearly. My second sentence (and point) remains.

I've had no responses to the wind ups I've put out about their spending, which says more than if they did respond.
They won't challenge for the title though in my view. That defence will concede loads against the better sides.
Hope your right but I just cant see a side containing Di maria, RVP, Rooney, Falcao and Mata not challenging for the title.

They'll probably spend again in January as well.
Because there are far better teams they will face who are guaranteed goals against that back line. They will score but they will also concede.
Put another way though, if they did win the league with that back line, it would be a piss poor reflection on us and Chelsea.
I don't expect them to win the league either, but think they have a great chance of coming third. Their defence will probably hold them back, but they do have the benefit of no CL football. The fear factor against the English teams can return quickly and they always can strengthen in January. I don't expect them to be able to cope with Chelsea or City unless they are fortunate to play the top two with lots of injuries. Liverpool and Arsenal on the other hand are teams I not only expect them to come ahead of, but also get the better of head to head.

they usually either have the best defense (e.g. chelsea in 2005 had best defense although arsenal scored more goals) or the best attack (united in 2013 scored more goals but also concede more than us), and if they have both then you can count on them being virtually winners.

It's over in my opinion.

Time to give Falcao the golden boot for getting 99 goals with a promise to go one better next term.
Rooney for MOTD's goal of the season for getting his wig onto the end of a 100yard Di Maria goal kick when De Gea was too injured to take it.
LVG for manager of the year for winning the League and FA Cup in his first season with a 100 million offer to star as the lead role of MUTV's version of The Theatre of Dreams very own Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles Save the World from the Blue Eyed Mercenaries.
De Gea to win the golden gloves for most clean sheets.
Cantona will win an Oscar for his remake of Leon.

And finally Lou's chippy to win the best for battered fish in the North West.

Despite offering a lot going forward, they still look awful at the back. Evans is dogshit, looks shakey as fuck with the ball and either passes it back to De Gea to hoof up or does so himself! There best defender atm seems to be Blackett and considering he's a youngster who's literally been thrown in at the deep end I can't see him keeping up his decent performances for much longer.

Although De Gea's improved, he's far from a top keeper, he makes far too many mistakes and he's prone to mistakes (as he did again today but got away with it).

QPR were dogshit, they came hoping to scrape a draw from the looks of it and had no threat going forward until Vargas came on, and yet they still should have scored twice.

So as people/media/scum fans will talk up the scums attacking threat, against decent teams they'll leak goals.

Easy to play when the opposition give you that much time and space. They'll struggle against good teams and won't finish in the top 4.
