Much as it pains me I have to jump to Ferguson's defence. Anyone would think that running a club successfully for 26 years was commonplace.

However he did it, he was a brilliant manager. c**t of a person, but to deny his achievements and the place they occupy in football history is utterly one-eyed. It's amazing what football tribalry will do for a man's sense of perspective.

I'd say being in one job for 26yrs, when the going is good, is beng in a comfort zone.

I'd say any number of top managers could have stayed there that long and achived what he did.

He managed the richest club in England and dominated, although consistant, its hardly surprising given his moivational(despot) skills

I think its fair to say he should have gone abroad and done it rather than stay put.

He's a glorified Walter Smith in some respects

You've kind of beaten your own argument here. Nobody from what I've seen has claimed that GPC was THE best manager ever, just that he was ONE of them.

You've backed up your argument by claiming that ANY top manager could have done what he did, therefore admitting that he was a top manager.

You then go on to question other clubs' records over the same time, well here they are;

Ferguson - 13 leagues, 5 FA Cups, 2 European Cups, 1 Cup Winners Cup.
Barcelona - 12 leagues, 6 Cups, 4 European Cups.
Madrid - 11 leagues, 4 Cups, 3 European Cups.
Munich - 14 leagues, 8 Cups, 2 European Cups, 1 UEFA Cup.
Milan - 8 leagues, 1 Cup, 5 European Cups.
Inter - 6 leagues, 4 Cups, 1 European Cups, 3 UEFA Cups.
Juventus - 8 leagues, 2 Cups, 1 European Cup.

So with the exception of Bayern Munich, he pretty much outdid every other European powerhouse either domestically or on the European stage. It's a piss poor argument to be honest.

In addition to this, the claim that he fluked his two European Cups holds no water either. Their routes to both finals were hardly flukes and I defy any genuine blue to keep a straight face whilst they tell me they wouldn't like us to get to the final this season and then fluke it and bring the cup home. The thread has descended into a farce. We all know he was a **** but let's not play the "He wasn't really good anyway" game.

there bad, they have scraped a few point with lady luck i can see us and chelsea wiping the floor with them

So after 8 games Van Snarl has 1 more point than Moyes had after 8. At least Moyes had played Liverpool, Chelsea and us!

Also Moyes won the next 3, odds on Van Snarl will be behind after 11 LOL

Love this from the Cafe (I bet he had a little tear in his eye when he wrote this)

However, our defense is atrocious and can easily cost us 4th place. Each time the opposition attack, they look like scoring. Top teams like Chelsea and City will rip us apart.

Forgot Moyes had Champs League and Carling Cup distractions!

I watched the first half of tonight's match , I was wondering the philosophy van gaal goes on about is it a long ball , because from what I saw united seem not to support the player with the ball , in fact nobody was near the person in possession ,all they did was knock it long and wide
stick someone on blind and they wouldn't know what to do , very one dimensional ,they are worse than I thought.

I really think they will struggle to get in the champs league( top four) next year

Well said, Kev. There's no shame in being candid and realistic about his achievements, even though he was/is a horribe **** of a person. No need to be Bitter Berties. There's more than enough to take the piss out of united about, without resorting to rewriting history.

Yes he used his influence; yes he was a bully; yes he was manipulative and mendacious when dealing with the media. What some people don't appreciate is that they are all characteristics shared by great football managers. It's not all about making good signings and giving a good half-time team talk. Staying at the top of football management is an intellectually rigorous, grueling war of attrition. It requires tremendous mental strength, self-belief and resolve to survive, never mind flourish.

Ferguson ticked too many of those boxes to be considered anything else other than a great manager.

It doesn't make him a great person though. Quite the opposite.

And a much tougher start, lest we forget.
