German sportswear giant Adidas has taken down an online advertisement for a retro Manchester United tracksuit jacket because the model wearing the 1985 edition top is also wearing Chelsea tracksuit pants.

There was little for either team to celebrate in 1985, with Liverpool winning their 16th title - and the FA Cup - ahead of the Red Devils in fourth and Blues in sixth.

But unpleasant memories of the year before legendary United manager Alex Ferguson turned up at Old Trafford will not be eased by the marketing foul-up.

Adidas - which has just started a reported $1.5 billion, 10-year sponsorship deal with United - pulled the ad from its website once the mistake was spotted by angry fans.

It's been a tough week for the faithful of each club, with United looking to rebound against Everton next round after losing 3-0 to Arsenal and Chelsea set to face Aston Villa after falling 3-1 to Southampton.
