Busby was deeply religious and I know from an ex youth player who was at the swamp at the time that he expected them to attend church/mass on a Sunday.
It was no coincidence Busby was followed by Frank OFarrel who was also a strong catholic.
In them days they also attracted huge support in Malta, a strong catholic country.
Also remember my old fella joking white smoke would appear from the chimneys in Trafford Park when the rags appointed a new manager, although my old fella had no time for religion.

Take away the rivalry and banter, I liked Busby and respected him, as a football manager and a human being.
My dad was born in Manchester, but his old fella was a Scot - orange lodge & Rangers. He apparently told my dad he can support whoever he wants apart from United (Catholics). So he're we are... Must be something in the religion thing, even if the majority of people don't go by it now.

There used to be loads of half and half wolly hats about with most being City/Rangers & rags/Celtic on them.

Bit like half n half scarves now but worn more by the hoolies than plastics.

Dad and his family all Protestant and all City fans, mam and her family all Catholic and all City fans, religion never played a part in my family.

I have a cousin who actually played for United, and as a kid I remember his dad saying the reason he hadn't got on there was that he wasn't a Catholic.

However, I have since come to the conclusion that the real reason was that he wasn't good enough. But the perception of the time is interesting anyway. At a guess, I think we would be talking about 1960 or thereabouts.

He was a remarkable and wonderful man.

And was a Blue long before he went to Stretford.

I remember an interview on t.v with John Stalker, former Deputy Chief Constable. He knew Busby very well and told the story that Busby lived near Maine Road when he was at City and the cencus was being carried out at the time. He gave his occupation when asked and the council officer obviously didn't quite get the strong Scottish accent. He was, therefore, recorded as being a 'fruit-boiler'!

Yeah, my dad's told me a version of that same story since I was a kid.

Setting ourselves up into a nice position.

City have Liverpool next game, we could conceivably be ahead of them in 2 weeks time.
Obviously not bothered about catching arsenal who are on the same points as us or Leicester who are above them in the league.
No, they aren't obsessed with us...honest.

And I bet the majority of them will tell you they will be supporting us as they just couldn't possibly back the red dippers, such is their hatred, yet the truth Is, all they care about is the (reflective) glory, they'll be secretly backing the dippers, no danger.
