I think the beauty of this appointment, if it happens, is that they have been forced into it. They have had to take reactive action because everyone else is appointing top quality managers, most notably us and, quite frankly, there is only one manager left with a name big enough for them. Whether they want him or not has become secondary to their need to be seen to be doing something. I'm sure he may win something but it'll be won the Mourinho way and there's a reason the bigger and more successful clubs steered well clear.

Spot on if you ask me.

Wasn't long ago that Man Utd fans hated Mourinho. That desperate, no principles left.

The Rooney one would have been interesting, in terms of supporter reaction, if he hadn't 'bottled it' ;-)

I remember Sammy MacIllroy getting a very mixed reception from the Kippaax when he signed in 1985. Terry Cooke got a generally good reception, so yes, it isn't black and white, and with united fans their hypocrisy is accentuated because so many of them have so readily bought into the crap that their club has spouted over the years, about "the united way", whereas years of mismanagement have taught us to be more skeptical about noises emanating from our club.

I just make the point that to anyone whose football club means a lot to them, supporting a winning team is a hugely enjoyable experience, and many people will find ways of adjusting their perspective, erasing things they've said from their minds, or simply justifying their change of heart 'because the club's best interests are what matter' if they get a scent of something that might deliver that success. It's simply football fans being human.

Edit: What will be very interesting for me is my old man. For years he's hugely disliked Mourinho personally and as a mangager, as well as the way his teams play the game, most especially their shenanigans. I asked him a while back if he'd give his season ticket up (which he's had for over half a century) if he ever rocked up at united and he told me in pretty unequivocal terms he would. Knowing him as I do, I reckon he'd struggle to give up going to united and I think he will renew. He'll find ways of justifying it to himself. That's not a criticism. They've been a huge party of his life for 75 years and I believe that will prove to be a bigger pull than his feelings of antipathy toward Mourinho. Supporting a football club is a hugely emotional experience and is very difficult to just give up. I guess that's what I'm talking about. It can make hypocrites of us all, me included.

Have to say I'm surprised the eye gouger has agreed to take over at the rags( we know about his previous desire and fawning over the job)but the landscape has changed even after we won the league under Mancini,it's not one or two teams it's 6,7 or 8 capable of winning and added to the fact better managers taking second tier clubs, makes any league win now a War of attrition, any rag fan thinking it's only a matter of him rocking up and running away with league and cups forget it....oh and how classy of the rags to leak straight after a cup win that they are replacing their manager why not leave it for a day or two...
