United thread 2017/18

I agree with all this, I would, however, add one thing to the mix. In a mature business there is a direct correlation between performance in the market place and revenue stream, so if you're peddling analogue shit in a digital world then pretty soon just how crap your product line is will be exposed in your sales figures. But that's not always the case with an established football club. Liverpool are commercially very strong, with healthy revenue streams, so are Arsenal and to a lesser extent Spurs, yet where are the trophies (FA Cup notwithstanding) where are the League titles? United, despite five years in the (relative) wilderness still make money hand over fist.

I seem to remember Woodward not too long ago highlighting Liverpool's healthy revenue streams, despite never having won the Premiership, what he was saying and perhaps Arsenal is the best example of this rather than Liverpool, is that in football it is possible to grow your revenue stream without necessarily performing particularly well on the field. In a nutshell, you don't need to be "There or thereabouts" you just need to be "thereabouts" and the additional investment to get "There" (the league title, win the Champions League) cannot be justified commercially, as the additional investment required to achieve these things is greater than the additional revenues that would be generated by achieving them.

In other words profit maximisation in football for the established clubs comes from being close but no cigar, because smoking the cigar is not worth the expense.
Great post. Been saying the same for a while.

Last financial year nearly £50m cash went out in debt servicing and dividends. Making enough money to sustain those payments is their number one priority, not winning the league, which has marginal financial benefit. Winning the CL is significant financially but the Glazers wouldn't sanction the level of investment that would be needed for them to do that. They'll only spend significantly to get back in the top four because that gives them CL revenue of at least £40m a season and stops them losing some commercial revenue that's performance-based. I've heard, from a couple of good contacts, about the battles Baconface/Gill had with the Glazers over money and the subterfuge they had to employ to get more out of them. One Baconface walked (and that was over money) they lost a manager able to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. I even believe that recommending Moyes was Baconface effectively saying to them "If you want someone to work on a budget then this is the guy".

The performance targets in their accounts talk about finishing in the top 3 in the PL, getting to the last 16 of the CL and reaching the quarter finals of the domestic cups. And if they do that, they've achieved their minimum objective.

And another thing, Mourinho. Why are you having to pay istree premium wages as well as istree premium transfer fees?

Is it coz utd’s no longer a prime attraction?

Any theories why that might be?

I think 659m fans worldwde, a 20 year waiting list, 4 trillion Twitter followers, 3 gazillion Instagramers and 100 trillion Youtubers disagree with you.
They are massive mate.

Could anybody put the exact figure up on how much they've spent trying to buy the title? And i mean spent since 2013. We get tarnished with that brush nigh on every season whereas they get the ' in transition' bollocks labelled on them.
They should have listened to bobby Charlton, he knew jose was a busted flush.

I've found a daily mail article from last month that states that they have spent £627 million since slur Alex left.

course love.

I'm honestly not that 'excited' about the league as I used to be. It's giving me a 'whoever is arsed enough to perform for the whole season' vibe. The CL however requires you to peak at the right moment and grind out results under huge pressure + you're battling with other European clubs which adds to the excitement.
