It does buy them time, but if you had to guess, it'd be that his time at United is rather limited.

Just had something pop up on my phone from Talksport.

RAGS are releasing a FOURTH kit, which is leopard skin print, selling for £65.00

How much are they in debt, and how desperate are they to push out a fourth kit??!

So I see that the Rags have activated DeGea's contract extension to keep him there another year. If I remember correctly this is the third or fourth time they have done this recently (I am thinking Shaw and Martial). I am not sure why they think this is a better tactic than negotiating a new contract with players they clearly want to keep. Seems a strange way to run a business to me but what do I know.

It’s smart move. De Gae wants to be on par with Sanchez now that the exrw year kicks in he is there for another 2 years just surprise they don’t have a 3 years one that kicks in it’s like tying your best players down indefinitely

I’m not sure about Martial, but fatty Shaw has signed a new five-year contract, rather than the rags activating a year's extension, as they have done with the alpaca.
