Don't know whether you are a cougar or a huskie, but they are rivals. Doesn't matter if one sucks, they both suck or there both very good, one wants to beat the other in everything.

Grew up in central California, college at UCLA.

Rival does indeed connote a competitor.

But it also tends to imply worthiness - one's rival needs to actually stand a chance of bettering you - else, why even deem to think them worthy of consideration?

It is with regard to that nuance - "worthy of consideration" - that my post was made.

United are historical rivals in every sense of the word.

United are in the same league as we are - and are rivals in the sense that they are competing with us. But they are clearly not rivals in the sense of being worthy competitors.

I may have incidentally read some of his posts - nothing in particular comes to mind.

The point being - I posted a clearly rhetorical remark - about United no longer being "rivals" - in the sense of the word - "true competitor."

In jumps Mr. Mustache with an aggressive attack - oblivious to the nature of the post and of the derivation and meaning of "rival."

I'll take your word that Mustache isn't illiterate - on first evidence the opposite seems true.
By Christ you're a tedious bore.
It was pointed out to you initially that utd were, are and will always be our main rivals, even if they end up in the conference.
Forget your dictionary definitions, what you need to understand is that the rivalry exists in classrooms, workplaces, homes, pubs and on the streets.
It may be your geographical location that stops you from understanding this, but the rivalry is more than competing for silverware.
Pipe down your obsessiveness with semantics and move on.

Are you familiar with the word "rhetorical"?
