Grew up in central California, college at UCLA.

Rival does indeed connote a competitor.

But it also tends to imply worthiness - one's rival needs to actually stand a chance of bettering you - else, why even deem to think them worthy of consideration?

It is with regard to that nuance - "worthy of consideration" - that my post was made.

United are historical rivals in every sense of the word.

United are in the same league as we are - and are rivals in the sense that they are competing with us. But they are clearly not rivals in the sense of being worthy competitors.
Although I hate to be reminded of it, in the penultimate match that we played against the scum, they bettered us. If we start thinking of ourselves as "above" rivalries, then we have devolved into them.

I may have incidentally read some of his posts - nothing in particular comes to mind.

The point being - I posted a clearly rhetorical remark - about United no longer being "rivals" - in the sense of the word - "true competitor."

In jumps Mr. Mustache with an aggressive attack - oblivious to the nature of the post and of the derivation and meaning of "rival."

I'll take your word that Mustache isn't illiterate - on first evidence the opposite seems true.

Yet another poster having a dig at Blues on the rags thread.

Not very friendly, is it?

Just watching NWT after the 10 o'clock news and it had a report about rail chaos over the weekend. It showed a video of Piccadilly Station absolutely jammed packed with people. The reporter said "This was a perfect storm of Christmas shoppers and football fans who'd been to Old Trafford and were trying to get back to London". I think she was a Blue being a little bit cheeky. "The city is ours". ;-)

Did you see any footage of @Nightmare Walking getting wanked off in a shop doorway?

My wife, who has absolutely zero interest in football, noticed that and was having a laugh at their expense - I knew there was some reason I'd married her!

The cynic in me suspects she was referring to Fulham fans not Cockney rags.
