Good point, pretty staggering looking at those numbers. 15 points behind the champion is the best they've done since the last time they won the league...and every single one of those seasons they finished behind God's own.
That 15 point gap needs to be put into context as it was behind the second worst winning points total of the last 18 years.
2017/18 is the only year they've broken the 70pt mark (usually the safe point for top 4), finishing with 81 (puts the 19 points into context as well, as it's behind the highest total in history). Although I'd argue their actual performances only merited around the high 60s/low 70s that season as well.
They need to start finishing in the top 3 every season and regularly breaking the 75 point mark before they can start bigging themselves up as potential challengers. Especially with Guardiola in the league.
If 81 points represents your peak performance, you're not going to win a title.

Yeah, rival fans won't like it but we're by far the most consistent on finishing top four. As we have the longest current streak of the big six, going back to 2010/11:

City: 3rd, 1st, 2nd, 1st, 2nd, 4th, 3rd, 1st
United: 1st, 2nd, 1st, 7th, 4th, 5th, 6th, 2nd
Chelsea: 2nd, 6th, 3rd, 3rd, 1st, 10th, 1st, 5th
Arsenal: 4th, 3rd, 4th, 4th, 3rd, 2nd, 5th, 6th
Liverpool: 6th, 8th, 7th, 2nd, 6th, 8th, 4th, 4th
Spurs: 5th, 4th, 5th, 6th, 5th, 3rd, 2nd, 3rd

Seasons in which each side failed to qualify for the next season's CL:
City 0
United 2
Chelsea 2
Arsenal 2
Liverpool 5
Spurs 5

Second successive season doesn't really tell the story since the pisscan retired.

2017/18 - 19 points behind 1st
2016/17 - 24 points behind 1st
2015/16 - 15 points behind 1st
2014/15 - 17 points behind 1st
2013/14 - 22 points behind 1st

They've been finishing on average 19.4 points behind the title winners over the last 5 years, this is just a normal season for them. Even on the years they get things right, or rather, things go their way (2014/15 and 2017/18), they're still miles off a title win.

A lot of them are stuck in the 90’s where 80 points is a cracking total.
It’s almost like the league has drastically improved.

Yeah, it's strange, it was well accepted you needed at a bare minimum 85+ to win the title (16/20 years?) and then Leicester came along and won it with 81 and now a lot of people seem to have had a reset to 75+ again. They need to realise that while Leicester had a fantastic season, if everyone else hadn't been so shit they'd have no silverware to show for it.

The only way to finish in the top 4 every season is to challenge for the title every season. Even in our worst seasons we only dropped out of reckoning for the title in the latter part of the season. If you're not good enough to do that, you'll have to settle for being out of the top 4 a lot of the time.

Taking this a step further, this is actually reflective of their entire 140 year history - when you take out the Busby and Ferguson eras. Only two league titles have been won outside their tenures, both over 110 years ago.

They have 15 more league titles than us but only three managers have won it for them, compared to five different managers for us.

Without these two managers, they are essentially on the level of Spurs - challenging for cups but not really threatening the champions.

It's astounding how the press push 'the raggy way' & keep them relavent when you see figures like that.

It's clear they've not been in contention since bacon left yet the smoke keeps being blown up thier arses to keep clicks up.

Anyway tick finally tocked many moons ago & now any sort of run/success is treated with more noise than if we win the quad.
