United thread 2018/19

In my opinion, they have a lot of work ahead of them to build something competitive either domestically or in Europe. Certainly they have the financial muscle to compete but sporting wise, they lack not only a coherent vision/plan but the infrastructure/organization to pull it off.

The arrogance is so endemic that the perception continues to be that their financial clout alone will make them attractive to any young talent in the market. Unless they are English or grew up ManYoo fans, the thinking is steeped in delusion. Currently there are no less than 10-12 big clubs who have sporting projects much further along than United and will continue to have an edge over your city rivals.

They indeed need a DoF, someone to put together a plan in concert with the coach to ensure continuity in their long-term goals. Any flux in that paradigm will only serve to destabilize them further

The positives for them is that they are awash in cash and have assets they can put on the market to rebuild or strengthen but highly predicated on having that coherent vision in place else it'll be a step forward and two back like previous years. Their biggest issue is shedding themselves of that enormous salary burden from Alexis Sanchez and I can only see a loan to possibly mitigate that. Yet, who would do that? PSG? Can't see how that would work out but perhaps if they can somehow circumvent FFP further

The negatives is that United can't simply throw cash at any & every target they desire on the market. One, potential targets know full well they get only bumper wages coming to a project that has been saddled with uncertainty for several years now. Two, those same targets can get similar wages & exposure going to any of 10-12 others on the market who can provide better sporting options.

I think the first step will be to bring in a credible DoF before they get better
With the appointment of Solskjaer and pending appointment of Ferdinand / Phelan as DoF, they have set their stall out now and appear to be going down the tried and tested route of corralling together ex-stars to form some form of footballing structure, a la Ajax, Bayern, Barca, Real etc.

I'm presuming that with the financial power they have, they are hoping to eventually entice the world's young and great to their stable.

As you have pointed out though, there are other probably more suitable options available to these players currently, including City, Liverpool and Spurs on these shores alone, never mind more exotic locations in Spain or Germany.

To get the thing going though, they will require some form of credibility on the pitch and this is where the current squad let's them down.

In order to garner some success, they will have to pay through the nose, like City when we got going, to bring in tried and tested, experienced and probably older stars, like Cavani, Bale or even Ronaldo.

They would hope that if they could entice one of these, then that would help the rest to fall into place.

They will require to rid themselves of most of their current squad, but it might not take as long as we'd like to believe.

I presume and hope, a bumpy road ahead for them

The lack of foresight and planning should be a major discussion topic at that club, and in the media in general. They constantly ignore it and refuse to accept it is their own making.

The way they have been at the top of the tree for decades but not spent a penny to future proof the club, the way slurgie went all out for van persie to ensure he went out on top, whilst knowing full well he would leave nothing for the next guy, whom he would ironically help appoint, is what the rags should really be up in arms about, and the real reason they are making snap decisions and error after error now.

United way, splurging on square pegs for round holes, they only have themselves to blame for the oath they have taken. This United DNA thing is literally them putting their fingers in their ears and making a wish. It isn't good business planning, it isn't a clear path,it is pure appease the masses. Playing on emotions with the fans is one thing, but with potential signings is another. There is a generation of young footballers here now, who everyone will want, who don't see the United dreamscape that Wio, Ole and the gang will all peddle. They grew up watching Barca, real, and hopefully soon city, playing winning, attractive football.

The United dream is fast becoming an outdated concept to many now, and they contradict it anyway here as they've got themselves into a position where they have to suppliement their attractiveness with huge personal offers.

Woodward even complelety ignored the fact that they'd had no success last season and the debt remains a burden, by highlighting instead the number of retweets and followers they can call on, in their AGM! Shows exactly what they wanted to become, and they achieved it. Success is optional for the glazers, as long as the masses keep buying the slipper and pj sets.

Meanwhile they've been overtaken and out thought by rivals with more ambition, and it will take expense, patience and a staggering change in their decision making capabilities to catch up.

Standing there stomping their feet and saying they demand success, rather than earning it because or who they are, not even having an idea of how to go about it, doesn't cut it.
