Well they wanted a consultant and while the inventor of German football turned out to be a subpar coach, he did fulfill his consultant mandate. They just didn't like what they heard I guess, but if they were just going to completely ignore him anyway for doing what they paid him to do (an "outside opinion" on what's wrong with the team) it's mystifying.

I think the narrative is different. They wanted to sack a “legend” without it looking like they fucked up, yet again. How many sacked managers get a 15 minute interview video saying goodbye? Any decent player going to a non CL team over the past 2 seasons should have been their targets. That could have got them some of Cucurella, Caicedo, Trippier, Guimaraes, Aaranson, Kulusevski, Scamaca, Odegaard, Saliba, Coutinho... even (shudder) Jesus and Zinchenko as examples.

And then there's the best of the rest like Ward-Prowse, Maddison, McGinn, Neves etc.

And then there are the academies to poach.

They could have a dedicated recruitment team working towards the strategy of forming an exciting new squad but instead they chase the stars like DeJong.

This imo is where the Glaziers are at fault. Long may they continue.
