I can't help but think that the preposterous non offside decision against City when we played at Triffid gave them some kind of unwarranted self belief in their over inflated self opinions.
Then, winning against a poor Barca side, then a cup, actually brought them to a point whereby they actually thought they were contenders.
The Dunning-Kruger effect springs to mind here.

Well if you are playing against bottom of the table teams you can, however when they come up against a dangerous team like Liverpool they would come a cropper.

Liverpool like to throw the kitchen sink at teams in sustained 15-20 minute spells. You either weather it or concede a lot of goals and are out of the game by the end of it. Going completely gung ho the rags left themselves wide open, we’ve taken some beatings pre 2008 however could you imagine what it would be like to witness a seven goal mauling with the personnel at City’s disposal?

We should have won at Old Trafford.

We played that second half perfectly, Guardiola knows the way to beat United is to starve them of the ball and to not allow them to transition.

We were in total control and if not for the worst decision the sport has seen for years, we'd have won the game.
