Unseen Lowry painting

He did indeed. He lived on Stalybridge road for 28 years till he died in 76. His house has a blue plaque on and is near the lights at Mottram junction.

A young couple bought it from the people who bought it after he died. There was a lovely story about them taking up the carpet in one room to find s load of paint splashed on the floor.

Is there still a statue of him sitting on a bench at the top of Mottram moor?

He (or his mother) lived on Station Road Swinton I think, just opposite where the Willows was and where Matalan is now. I like Lowry's work but if you've seen one, you've seen them all.

He lived in Swinton and worked as a rent collector. Then he moved to Mottram when he retired. The things he painted at night were often the things he had seen while walking around during the day.

I met him very briefly. On Friday afternoons I'd often break my crosstown journey home from school in town & go to my dad's office, which was then on Lloyd St. I'd do some homework then get a lift home

He'd often take me to the Kardomah on the corner of Albert Square for a pot of tea. My mum had a cafe in the Corn Exchange (a young Mike Summerbee & his pal George Best were regulars) & my dad was very into local artists like Harold Riley and used to showcase some up and coming artists' works on the walls of the cafe.

We were in the Kardomah one Friday afternoon and my dad quietly pointed out a white-haired man sat opposite, saying "That man's called LS Lowry & he's a well known artist". He had a brief word with him as we went out but the name meant nothing to me of course.

(Awaits GDM).

Why is that 'lovely' ? take up my carpet and you will find loads of paint splashed on the floor as well.
