Unwitting Footballer Encounters

My sister went out with Jeff Clarke just before we swapped him for Dave Watson.
He once came round for tea with Peter Barnes.

When I was a kid our school team won everything one year and at the presentation there were a few pro players to give out the cups etc. I was standing waiting to get called for scoring the most goals in the cup and one of the players was standing beside me. He was a player called Billy Abercrombie, young at the time who played for St Mirren before going to Aberdeen. The conversation went like this.

Billy. Alright wee man. You did well to score the most goals.

Me: thanks

Billy; do you want my autograph?

Me: who are you?

Billy: billy Abercrombie

Me: No. do you want mine?

Billy, laughing: cheeky wee

Didn’t have a clue who he was. :)

Chris Kamara walking in Manchester near Shambles Square. Stopped and had a photo, he had a really nice pair of shoes on which we spoke about.

Nicky Weaver in Moon under the Water, had a chat for a few mins, massive bloke.

Andy Ritchie in a restaurant called Fallen Angels in Castleton, he recommended the sardines as a starter

David Silva in Madrid airport after we had lost the semi final, He along with us was flying to Barcelona, he was going to see the doctor in barca. Had a picture in the waiting lounge before the flight. Turns out he was sat in front of us on the plane and my mate had wind. It was a little embarrassing

Mark Kennedy in town not long after he had been done for jumping on a cop car in Ireland. He did not like it when I mentioned it

A couple of years ago, we were visiting friends in Perth, Scotland. We went to church with them on Sunday morning, and who should we see in the next pew? Graeme Souness.

Some years back now the missus and me were staying at quite a decent hotel near Telford. At breakfast, I suddenly realised that one of the guys on the next table was the legend that was Fitzroy Simpson. (At the time he was playing for Telford United, if I recall correctly.)

It’s tenuous but the entire Welsh squad were at Aarhus Airport the morning after Denmark away. Ryan Giggs obviously the most famous face but I think I caught the back of Bale’s head as he was escorted to the Madrid charter.

Avram Grant was at Gatwick Airport late last year. It was something daft like 4am on a Sunday.

Peter Bonneti used to have a chauffeur/taxi/transfer car company that the company I worked for used to use, he was goalkeeper coach at city at the time as well. Anyway he picked me up one day to go to Birmingham, think he was a driver short on the day and we had a good chat about football in general and city of course, then every time my name appeared on their job sheet he made a point of picking me up guess he liked my tips on goalkeeping!!! So I used to have an ex England goalkeeper as my chauffeur!

A few years ago I was in a food hall in Orlando Florida one of the many retail outlets ,anyway sat down to eat my sarnie and when I looked up saw Gordon banks at the next table ,I let him finish his meal then round sharpish for a quick photo ,what a great bloke had a good chat ,RIP Gordon
