‘the most innocent man in the history of our country’. To say that in Texas, which has an uncomfortable history of executing people who were subsequently proven innocent, is, even by his standards, rich.
Agree - he might be pleased by how well he is doing in GQP primary polling. But this shit show does not play well outside the base.Trump lacks any strategy to change the minds of key voter groups who strongly oppose him and whose votes are required to win the 2024 general election :
- Independent voters
- Suburban women
- Voters under 35 y/o
I've spent hours today reading the comment sections on both Breitbart and Gateway Pundit. It seems there are a lot of (former) Trump supporters who are actually very unhappy with his behaviour and want him to stop attacking anyone in the GOP that disagrees with him / questions his policy priorities / questions his temperament. They believe he should follow the Reagan rule of always avoiding saying anything nasty about a fellow Republican. Many commentators are simply bored with him and believe he is more likely than not to lose another election due to his unattractiveness to people outside his MAGA base: he is simply alienating people more and more. His attacks on Desantis have not gone over well. Trump seems to follow a scorched earth policy when it comes to any other Republican. So bad is it that I have seen numerous comments accusing Trump (the former Democrat) of intentionally driving non-Trump GOP voters away from the polls whilst simultaneously alienating Independents and conservative Democrats. It's all very confused out there.Agree - he might be pleased by how well he is doing in GQP primary polling. But this shit show does not play well outside the base.
To win a US election you need money and a good plan to connect with swing voters. Difficult to see where that would come from.
I'm no fan of Chuck Todd, but he had Trumpy Pumpy's lawyer tied up in knot here...
I admire this thoughtful attempt to express confusion at Trump’s strategy. And you’re of course right. But perhaps I can clarify. He doesn’t give a flying motherfuck at the moment if he wins or loses, or about converting non-believers. He’s running because he thinks being a candidate for President makes it more difficult for him to be prosecuted for a now reasonably wide series of crimes. He can always claim he’s being persecuted for his politics. And to be fair if Nixon’s history is any guide it’s probably the best card in his hand. Nixon’s own staff — like Al Haig — and Senate Republicans were worried any effort to “force” or even convince Nixon to resign might be later perceived as a coup.I've spent hours today reading the comment sections on both Breitbart and Gateway Pundit.
