US Politics Thread

But there is no “waking up.” Those who know this already outvote (majority-wise) those who are a part of it who will never leave it, ever, until they die, as it’s the first time their views have been “accepted”. So the GOP is bleeding because it’s out of voters. They’re just beefing too slowly.

Let me ask this: if Trump keels over tomorrow, who becomes the de facto leader of the GOP? I don’t know but whomever it is probably can’t save it from death.
Don't tempt me with good times ;-)

In reality that is the best the GOP could hope for at this point, although it's probably still too late. I think McConnell hasn't got much fight left in him, and if he manages to hold off the Grim Reaper until after the 2026 mid-terms when he's up for re-election he'll probably stand down anyway. That's going to leave a gaping hole in the Senate, that the likes of Hawley, Cruz and any of the other insurrectionist chickenshits will be falling over each other to try and fill. As for a presidential candidate, the current crop ALL have the stench of Trump on them, despite what they are now saying.

I can't see a way out for them. They are basically screwed.

If anybody has access to BBC iPlayer have look at Lois Theroux's 'Forbidden America' - 'Extreme and Online episode where he did interviews with Nick Fuentes (Far-right extremest) and a host of other right-wing influencers.

Absolutely NUTS. Rightly or wrongly, that's what you get with the 1st Amendment.

The GOP Tory Party is utterly broken. It is a political party in name only. The idea of public service is long gone. In reality its just about power and the retaining of power by any means, generally by stirring up irrational hatred and division.

It's a self-licking lollipop, where racists, fascists and downright lunatics are made to feel at home. If the country as a whole don't wake up to this fact, there is no telling where this will end.
Still works.

It’s going to be impossible for any constitution that is materially unchanged to remain fit for purpose over that period, surely - especially when you consider the technological, societal and demographic changes that have occurred in that time. It’s surely impossible for any such legislation to remain as relevant over that period. There are things that simply cannot be foreseen. It’s can’t be a controversial point I’m advancing.
While your belief can’t be considered “controversial,” the AGREEMENT on change is always the issue, especially given the level of agreement required.

With the current levels of division, it’s almost impossible to believe any Constitutional Amendments could get through the process in the foreseeable future.

The problem, highlighted by the lack of concern by many with the levels of right wing delusion, is the levels of left wing nonsense on offer today!

Oh, for a sharp blade to exorcise the extreme 10% on BOTH ends of the Bell Curve to reduce the “crazy” rhetoric that steals too much oxygen from the centrists, who long for far more centrist policies and politics.

Sadly, with the rise of Trump, we have seen significant numbers of Americans desire to maintain their basest hard right beliefs and shape policies in their image. That surge in “saying the quiet part out loud” has set politics on its ear, because it’s not nearly as small of a slice of the population as possibly previously believed.

Scratch the human animal and you expose the animal within!

Many of us are not nearly the evolved animals we believed, or hoped!

The anti LGBTQ agenda on social media is off the scale.
Is it any greater than the high level of pro-LGBTQ+ content that has been thrust on an unsuspecting population?

This used to be an issue that most people generally accepted as long as it wasn’t “in your face,” because I think most people don’t care what people do in their private lives as long as no-one is getting hurt.

However, I know many, many people who are definitely on the liberal side of the seesaw who are aghast at the level of “in your face” LGBTQ+ media today.

Like most people I personally know, I believe people have the right to love whomever they please. However, like them, I also believe it’s private choice and I don’t need my nose rubbed in it or reminded of it at every turn.

Of course, in a country that pretends to be more religious than it is by deed, the current explosion in media of the LGBTQ+ community gives the right wing yet another bludgeon in their culture war. Heck, De Santis is running for President on it!

From my perspective, as a liberal in a fairly conservative community and workplace, the current levels of anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment feel like a reflexive response to the unprecedented increase in LGBTQ+ content right in front of our collective faces.

In addition, demographics and who owns the media may play a large factor on levels of exposure.

I don't know why people care so much about pro LGBQT+ content being 'in your face'.

It isn’t affecting me in any way, shape or form. If some fella wants to paint rainbows on his face and strut round the local supermarket dressed in a tutu, waving pompoms and singing Y M.C.A, then whatever. As long as he's not getting in my way I don't have to pay any attention, although in all fairness it'd probably lighten up an otherwise boring shopping trip.

It's just something for people hang their prejudices on like a lot of other issues that are politicised. The perfect non-issue for the Right-Wing Christian fundamentalists to get a hard-on over. For the vast majority of sane people it's just not worth even thinking about.
