US Politics Thread

With any luck, the police will take those two into custody after they refuse to pay overdue book return fees.
San Diego isn’t exactly what I’d call the most liberal place in the USA that’s for sure. But I found it interesting that the response was so overwhelming. As the parent of an LGBTQ kid especially, it gives me some hope that for all the megaphone-grabbing, the majority of Americans don’t think or act like these people do. I live in a liberal enclave, a total bubble, so it’s comforting the whole nation hasn’t gone crazy. And the attendance at Trump’s fascist rallies . . . excuse me . . . campaign events isn’t exactly overflowing either.

Reading all this it’s amazing the US has managed to survive for nearly 250 years. The reason it has of course is that generally speaking those of both parties put duty to nation over party when confronted with a choice. But the system is inherently built on the trust that this is the priority those who vote and govern and administer will make.

Oh well. Perhaps some day we can aspire to lose the biggest empire the world has known and after that vote ourselves into permanent economic exile.
Maybe both political systems are wank.

I can't come up with one reason for the Electoral College. It basically cancels out minority votes in non-swing states so it lowers voter turnout. Think about it, if you're a Democrat in Idaho why even show up? Or a republican in Hawaii? I know the idea is that it gives more power to smaller states but in reality the only states that get any attention at all are swing states and every election cycle there are fewer and fewer. Right now we have PA, WI, MI, NV, GA, AZ and MN. That's seven states where it matters to vote, it's ridiculous.
These rules were written when supposedly intellectual (of the day) white men ruled everything and thought that educated white men would ALWAYS be in charge and be working to protect their peoples from outsiders trying to impose their will on them.

The Constitution was clearly a reflexive document, the the FF thought they’d given good, sensible white men a way of “fixing things that became outdated” through the Amendment process. They purposely didn’t make it easy, just so a slim majority could keep changing the rules of the land, but they could have had zero clue that the likes of MTG & Boebert could get elected locally, and De Santis could govern one of the largest, fastest growing, swing states and that Trump could ever be a nominee, let alone President AND seriously run 3 times even after two impeachments and multiple criminal indictments!!!

That said, Biden looks like he has gone second term Reagan on us and it’s a disgrace what is happening with the California Senate seats!

I’m sure the Founding Fathers are rolling over in their graves at what their “more perfect Union” has become.

It’s going to be impossible for any constitution that is materially unchanged to remain fit for purpose over that period, surely - especially when you consider the technological, societal and demographic changes that have occurred in that time. It’s surely impossible for any such legislation to remain as relevant over that period. There are things that simply cannot be foreseen. It’s can’t be a controversial point I’m advancing.

I have a niece who is LGBTQ.

My parents were born circa 1930 - my father on a rural Missouri farm; my mother in a strict Catholic community in Guam. You can imagine what my conservative parents thought about the LGBTQ. Hell, my Dad, who loved nature and wild animals, despised hyenas solely due to their mating habits (look it up)! And though he loved tennis, he strongly disliked Billy Jean King and Martina Navratilova.

Anyhow, my brother, my sister and I all ended up in support of LGBTQ rights in spite of our upbringing. Go figure... well, actually, I guess it's straightforward. We were all brought up in suburban California, which had a large influence on our values and beliefs.

I read that something like 7% of Americans identify as LGBTQ. Given how close (from an electoral college standpoint) recent presidential elections have been in the US, any party that goes out of it's way to alienate 7% of the voting public is setting itself up for problems.
