US Politics Thread

Had dinner just before Xmas with a guy who is a long-time friend and colleague of my partner, she’s known him for years. He’s the nicest guy you could ever wish to meet, insanely intelligent and a is a Senior Vice President at one of the top 30 companies that make up the Dow Jones Industrial Average. His entire job and career, which he’s done very, very well at, involves a high level of critical/ systems thinking and being able to successfully connect the dots from disparate data-sets and scenarios. His political beliefs are absolutely insane though, when he gets on to the subject, he sounds no better than the yokel in the video upthread. It really is bizarre.

This explains a lot. If you look at the January 6th rioters, you will notice many are small business owners who you would think have too much to lose. Yet they all got dragged by Trump’s words…

I think a level of stupidity is certainly required to properly fall for a cult leader however it doesn’t mean that very intelligent, usually corrupt, people won’t support one. However they will be doing it to further their own selfish ends and will believe that the demagoguery of the leader will have a positive effect on their fortunes. The majority are fucking idiots though and the minority non-stupid ones are the ones that are the biggest enablers because of their influence in media and big business.
Henning Wehn used to come on for the second half of his show with marching music and get everyone clapping along, then say it was a Nazi tune and ask "Now do you see how easy it is to get caught along?"

That’s really clever
