US Politics Thread

@FogBlueInSanFran
Out of curiosity, do you still support the Electoral College as it now stands? If not,what changes would you make?
I'm conflicted on this. I think there's an argument that the will of populous states should not necessarily dominate the will of less populous states. I believe over time the Electoral College will lock in a blue Presidency because of demographics and migration patterns to historically (meaning more recent history) red states. That said, the will of relatively few voters in close states should not have the ability to sway the vocal majority. I don't know enough about the by-state weightings to know if they're fair. I also think the bi-cameral legislation ensures some "voice balance" already so I am not sure the Presidential election needs to; e.g. we don't have an in-state, by-state Electoral College for Senate elections where counties get college votes within a state. Bottom line: I think it's probably antiquated. I don't think it's going to matter soon to those who support blues, which -- as I've said a million times -- is precisely the fear in the GOP has which has allowed if not encouraged such extremist politics when it comes to election denying. I also don't think it's changing.

Agree with this. It's a well run political machine vs a chaos agent who has zero regard for his own party.

If you look at Georgia, the dems should have no chance of winning there. Its deep bible belt territory. Biden won there because the dems played a great ground game. They maxed out in knocking doors and he took it by a fraction of a percent. They also forced run offs for the 2 Senate seats and Trump, mad that the States gop control were going to certify the Biden win, basically told his voters to stay home in the run off. Trump sabotaged his own party out of pure spite. He also shot himself in the foot as those 2x seats were enough to swing control.

It's pretty clear that Trump has zero interest in the gops grass roots. And the dems are forcing the abortion issue on to the ballots and will push hard to get every voter to turn out.
Yup. My optimism comes from exactly this. Where/how will Trump get the extra votes he needs? He just can’t do it, whatever nonsense the Maga supporters believe and vote for.

General question, noting the age of each candidate, what happens if the President croaks it, do you have to go again to another election or does the VP takeover while they find a new President within the party?

If the President croaks it the VP takes over until the next election. See Lyndon Johnson

How this gigantic mega rich country can only find a crook and a geriatric pensioner to stand for their highest office is a complete mystery to me.
Who do you suggest Americans should have chosen then?

Biden won nomination because he was the safe, centrist pick with tremendous experience against a fringe idiot lunatic racist megalomaniac running to enrich himself and protect himself from jail on the heels of a disastrous first term which saw millions die and our foreign enemies gain chutzpah and ground.

Every post that somehow makes them seem equivalent in some way is destructive to the chance of defeating evil.

Is there nobody else?

Is there nobody else?
Not right now, no. I am sure someone will emerge. Folks seem to think my Governor Gavin Newsom is next but I assure you everyone will be complaining about how “slippery” he is a few years from now, and he’s no kind of Everyman. Maybe Buttegieg but not sure if a gay man can win nationally, even now.
