Said beforehand that I couldn't foresee another debate after this and would be surprised if there were. Harris’ team can publicly call for one, of course, but they will know that Trump’s side will be reluctant for him to repeat the ordeal. His people will advise against because deep down they know that he simply doesn’t have the patience to practice and won’t stick to a script, nor does he have the mental agility to process the data needed to coherently attack Harris’ record. Left to his own devices, he’s a greater danger to himself, so with the polls that tight, the risks for him outweigh the rewards.

Should there be no other debate, and Harris does indeed go on to win from here, then we may look back and conclude that the first debate did for Biden and the second debate did for Trump. Might have to reappraise the idea that televised debates are declining in importance.

And your answer — “It’s a cult of personality” — is the answer to why — because it is, those other politicians must pay him fealty or risk getting primaried by deeper-in-weeds MAGAs e.g. what happened to Liz Cheney (who is now btw actually campaigning for Harris).

Also Trump lies. And keeps lying even after being called out. He has and has never had a moral compass. Very hard to fight that if you do have one. And if you’re a cult leader, the cult believes and re-amplifies your lies until they become truths.

One thing Trump has done is actively promote loyalists, often at the expense of those that don't show loyalty.

So republicans are faced with the issue that if they speak out against Trump it may well be very costly for their careers.

I think a Trump loss is the only hope for their party. If he wins this time, they may as well change their name to the Trump Party. And those moderates in the party will be better off forming a new one.

It is horrendous that so many traditional Republican politicians put their careers ahead of the country. They should read what J. Michael Luttig, an arch Republican says: I am voting for Harris. Trump is a danger to democracy, the constitution and the rule of law.

The only way is if judge Marchant refuses post sentence bail. He will appeal that but it will be from a cell. It will take years in the other cases to get past immunity arguments.
