US Politics Thread

I am no lover of Trump, he is fucking nuts, but i am not comfortable with a democratically elected President being censored by a big tech corporation. I know it is there platform blah blah, but still it makes me uneasy that a Corporation can have so much power in a democracy.
This is not a good take IMO.

He was democratically defeated too. His lies about that, his willingness to spread them, and his utilization of the platform to incite an overthrow of said election are WHY he was banned.

Do you think he would have been banned if he’d just stood up and said, “Hey, I concede” at ANY point in the last two months?

The power of Twitter is a function of those that use it. If everyone people cared about didn’t use it, it wouldn’t have any power.

There’s. A. Code. Of. Fucking. Conduct.
And. There. Should. Be . A . Code . Of . Fucking. Conduct. That . Limits . Corporate. Power. And . There . Ability . To . Influence . Democracy.

Because . Oligarchy. Is. Far. More . Fucking. Dangerous. Than. Democracy.

I suspect that what happened is that they got overrun and were then told to basically stand down. What is very clear is that the numbers were not enough and teh help was way too slow. Its classic planning to fail. The decision making around planning and how it planned out needs looking at. Did any trump / DoJ people get involved. It will be interesting to see what comes out. He clearly demonstrated in the summer he can crack down when it suits him. Did he order the soft and slow approach - none of us would be surprised.
Are the Capitol police any more of a "force" than the yeomen of the guard at the Tower of London?

Christ you don’t half talk some absolutely fucking shite.

Twitter is a private fucking company with published rules. Trump wasn’t banned because they don’t like him, he was banned for inciting violence and insurrection and even then only for 12 hours. He then went and did it again.

So yeah, ban the cûnt. Abso-fucking-lutely. Be concerned all you want, I couldn’t give a fuck and neither could Jack or anyone else that matters.

Holding those in office to the same rules as the rest of us isn’t oligarchy, you mental. It’s the opposite.

The power of the corporations makes me far more uneasy than a daft **** tweeting shit.
If you get drunk and violent on a plane, the airline can ban you from flying with them. If you commit an offence at a football match, the club can ban you for life if they like. If you make a fraudulent claim, the insurance company may refuse to insure you. Etc, etc.

It's about taking personal responsibility for your actions and abiding by rules and codes of conduct.

There is a code — Millions of pages of code. You just don’t think the code is strong enough. And, I’d guess, you don’t understand the code either. Not that it’s a sin — I don’t understand it all either, I don’t agree with all that I do understand, I think some should be stronger and some weaker. But your absolutism isn’t helping your argument.

No, I can’t stand that self satisfied ****.
Fair enough.

Regarding you and rascal, he’s blocked me for a row but never mind, I actually see both points of view and I’m a little torn.

These big tech companies have so much control over the discourse and I’m a little uneasy about it.

I have no problem banning Trump on this occasion specifically, it’s just the power they have I don’t like.

So I agree with you in this case but I see Rascals point of view too.

No. When we hang despots they become martyrs FOR A WHILE, maybe. But they are still despots. And the us and them dynamic was around before, will be around for a long time anyway. Twitter has rules. He violated them. He’s therefore gone. He was warned. He ignored the warnings. He should have been gone a long time ago; I agree this isn’t the BEST time. But this is like letting the three-year old off the hook when he throws a tantrum.

for what its worth I think its all too late - I think where Pie has it wrong is not taking into account the likelihood that Trump will be too pre-occupied answering questions from various forces of law and order to be of any relevance - if its a choice between starting his own Parler or putting his efforts into not going to jail I know where Trump will be concentrating on.
