US Politics Thread

it's actually easy to resolve, give/impose on the illegals (pick whichever suits your viewpoint) a temporary visa allowing them to work and live in the USA for a period of, let's say 2 years, during which time they must apply for full residency. This gets them in the system, gets them paying taxes, gets them access to benefits and healthcare and gives them a route to a "better life". USA retains the benefit of the workers.

Failing to register becomes a deportable offense within oh I don't know, 6 months, meaning you should then have a smaller issue to deal with.

Of course to make it attractive, the permanent residency should be readily achievable, rule out those with criminal records for violent, sexual or class A drug offenses, let the rest in.

Obviously you'll have to absorb any economic impact of higher wages, higher social security costs etc, but hey, there's no such thing as a free lunch is there?

This politics lark is easy , Vote Flook for PM/Prez
It's a good idea, but the economic impact will still be huge and could easily crash the economy.

I think many here who are trying for thoughtful compromises don't understand the real problem.

The real problem is that illegal immigrants -- whether they stay, get amnesty, a special visa or whatever -- get "special treatment."

They get something Trump supporters don't/didn't/can't.

That's "not fair."

So there's no "fair" solution except deport them all.

which was the stance when the orange shit-gibbon was electioneering, different now though as its damn near impossible to execute

The people who decry the situation as 'unfair' rarely understand the fact that they have personally benefitted from the current situation, and the ones that cry the loudest are often a net drain on society. If every single worker in the US was documented and legal, prices for most consumer goods and services would be much higher than they are now.

In political news J. Ann Seltzer, of the "Gold Standard Pollster" in Iowa has decided to retire from doing the Presidential polls.

Good luck to Ms Seltzer.

In more detailed political news, Des Moines Register executive editor Carol Hunter wrote that Selzer had discussed a timetable for “winding down her work on the poll” over the last few years and confirmed that Selzer had given her notice over a year ago, saying that she would “not renew when her 2024 contract ended with [the] publication of the pre-election poll.”

That sounds like a fantastic system and we should employ it in the UK.

Why don't we forget legal migration and just attract millions of illegal migrants. They could do all the shite jobs and we make them pay tax. However, because they're illegal they will take very little out because we can prevent them from accessing healthcare, education etc. Winner.

I really do despair sometimes. There is zero argument for an illegal population in the US or UK.
I think that's the argument used for the first anti-immigrant legislation in Britain designed to stop the influx of pauper Jews from eastern Europe.

Agree 100%. A couple of years ago I happened to be watching CSPAN one afternoon and Chuck Shumer was at a podium in front of the Senate holding a (small) press conference and in a moment of unvarnished truth, and without a hint of political rhetoric, he stated that we need as much immigration as possible to offset America's declining birthrate and the problem of the ratio of workers to retirees etc. He looked genuinely troubled.

Telling Americans that they aren't having enough children (they aren't, whatever the cause) is political suicide.
Whereas not having enough people (children of American citizens *, or immigrants) to pick crops, build buildings or clean places is not political suicide - until things fall apart (literally: https://www.axios.com/2022/02/04/americas-bridges-are-falling-apart-faster-than-expected )

* carefully avoiding "native Americans"

Just watched this discussion between two YouTube intellectuals - Alex O'Conner and Destiny. Although it was filmed before the election Destiny does highlight some of the issues raised by @FogBlueInSanFran about democrats having to sink as low as the republicans. He sees that there is no political capital in taking a high road approach as the posture a democrat might take in that respect is easily mocked and undermined by the shameless rhetoric of the right.

An interesting point Destiny also makes is that trying to take a centrist or moderate approach is cowardly and gives the extreme view a sheen of respectability
