Exactly, this equalises the narrative really.

I mean bloody hell, the Democrats ran on a ticket of going after tax evaders and here is the president using a privilege of pardon to let off his son, a now convicted tax evader.

It seems like Joe knows he is destined for irrelevance out of the political eye so why not give your son a leg-up out of the mess he has created for himself?

The optics couldn't be poorer.

There are no official new rules before or after 20 Jan. The electorate has decided that they don’t care about the existing rules which is why the whole Trump shit show will end in tears - mostly for the people that voted for him. Playing by the rules did fuck all for the Dems so why should Biden give a shit if some blowhards think badly of him.

If it wasn't pardoning Hunter, there'd be some other whataboutery, made up or no. Look at the post above talking about Patti Hearst FFS. Imagine MAGA saying, "Gosh, Joe didn't pardon Hunter -- what an hono(u)rable guy!"
