I just watched Black Klansman on Netflix.
I saw it before, but this edition has footage of Charlottesville 2017 at the end of it.

Okay I realise this is a hand grenade into our cordial discussion that was developing, but Footage of David Duke at the end in 2017 mentioning Trump and MAGA and also footage of Trump commenting on what occurred is a little disturbing.
Particularly now with him taking a second term in January and the 2025 manifesto.

Next year is going to be interesting.
You know what the Chinese say about interesting times.

It's always had that footage, I can remember watching it in the cinema.

Let me start by picking a bone: I consider voting for harsher sentences for shoplifting as "recriminalizing". You are just using more accurate words. The effect is in essence the same. :)

Overall, I think your response looked at this from the point of view of the election and Trump winning.I was saying more generally, that people who are either apolitical or not on the left, have good reason to oppose some of its excesses of the left in so far as it affects them personally or intellectually.

But I wanted to requote this point, and it's one you r made often:

"then I submit that we go back to a core ideology of Trump/conservative supporters: other people are getting something they didn't get, and they're upset about it."

This quote epitomizes the hand waving away of legitimate grievance I was talking about... I mean you can apply that very same framework to any ill:

Oh black people are slaves and they don't like it? Just another group complaining that others people (whites) are getting something they didn't get (freedom), and they don't like it."

Women want rights? Just another group complaining that other groups ( men ) are getting something they didn't get ( right to vote) and they don't like it

Gay people want rights? Just another group complaining that other people (straights) are getting something they did not get (right to marry) and they don't like it.

You see how easy it is to dismiss any ill using that framework? That's exactly the point I was making.
“Rights” are different than “happiness.”

A LOT different.

As conservatives argue about 2A by the way.

Well if that’s how you would like to measure it then ok.

Own my own home with no mortgage. It’s rather modest though but I can comfortably afford. No debt of which to speak- only $4 grand or so on my car..

Hate having a car payment!!

So just out of curiosity what are you unhappy about? Sounds like life is good.
Yes life is pretty good but it could always be better. The main thing is that I am reasonably healthy. That's the most important thing of all. Since this thread is about politics and such there are always going to be grievances/complaints and rightly so. It is one of the elements in the 1st Amendment after all.

I am angry that I havent had a raise in 4 years, that my promised pension was stolen in Chapter 11 proceedings, my earning power was diminished by about 30% for over 10 years. That is work wise.

I am disgusted and dissatisfied about the lack of leadership in the country and the lies and bullshit we have heard for a long time. I am disgusted by Washingtons immigration policy. The cost of living and the cost of energy ie inflation. I dont like what I see as injustice and crime in many big cities. I dont like hypocrisy.

Thankfully, I got out of New York a couple of years ago. New Jersey isn't much better but it is, indeed, better.

Some of these things effect me, some dont. Just because they dont doesnt mean I dont care about the negative impact it might have on other citizens.

He is anti leftist. How is this hard to understand? There is way more than enough crazy stuff brewing on the far left to turn a decent person's stomach.

The fact that most decent 'lean left' folks here hand wave away some of these views, while saving their venom for anyone right of center is interesting in of itself and something history probably needs to study.
It’s funny how everything you don’t like about “lefties” is “far left,” yet everything “lefties” seem not to like about your preferences is “center right”…even though much of it, and much of what Trump espouses is FAR FAR RIGHT.

I seem to remember how he told us he had never heard of Project 2025 and certainly hasn’t read it, yet here we are, with a Cabinet out of Heritage Foundation central casting!!

It’s a bad joke and the whole world is laughing at us from behind their hand, but WE have to live it!!

The lies Trump etc say ? The cost of energy and inflation coming down due to the inflation reduction act ?

Okay let's not generalize. Define far right as you see it and what policies animate the "Far Right"?

Sometimes, I feel "far right" is often used as an euphemism for racist/bigot. But I digress.

While I'd bet good money Trump never read Project 2025. Something most people will agree with. This had to be the silliest of all the Trump attacks during the campaign.

Oh my God! A conservative Presidential candidate cabinet has a couple of people who worked for the Premier Conservative think tank..Shocker!!!

Should he have set up a resume shop in front of the Center for American Progress to please worried liberals?

Straight out of Jersey. :)

There appears to be an awful lot of effort going in to trying to get Hegseth (a Fox News host, and former soldier) installed as Sec Def, and alarmingly so. Almost like they want someone in that position who is willing to do as they're told with regards to deploying the military domestically, and Hegseth has agreed to be that guy.

Meanwhile the current actual president hurries to empty billions of dollars from the public coffers into the defence contractors pockets. All because since Nov 5 he's been filled with a sudden urgency to help the Ukrainian people of course.

I don't know if you saw the undercover video of the EPA official saying "we're throwing gold bars of the Titanic."? The name of the EPA bureaucrat is Brent Efron.

They've spent $50 billion in the last year alone, billions and billions to so-called non-profits, for which they then go and work. They're NO DIFFERENT TO THE REPUBLICANS THEY CRITICIZE.

"Over the last year we’ve given out $50 billion dollars for climate things…so to go work for one of these places would be really cool.

"We gave them [nonprofits] the money because… it was an insurance policy against Trump winning. Because they aren’t [a government agency], they’re safer from Republicans taking the money away."

Google his name.

Originally from Boston, Brent studied mechanical engineering at Washington University in St. Louis. Following graduation, Brent worked as an organizer on two Democratic campaigns, first for Senator Tammy Baldwin in 2018 and then for Elizabeth Warren’s presidential campaign in Iowa during the 2019-20 Democratic primary. More recently, he worked in the North Carolina for Biden campaign headquarters as deputy data director and then joined the new Biden administration as Special Assistant to the Associate Administrator for Policy at the U.S. EPA. Through these experiences, he has seen first-hand how essential politics and policymaking are to making change. After receiving an MPA from SPIA, Brent is interested in working on implementation of new federal climate legislation, the Inflation Reduction Act, as well becoming a champion for Climate Adaptation at the local level, particularly in communities facing disproportionate impacts from the climate crisis.

lol "Inflation Reduction Act." Sure it was. We know exactly what it was.
