US Presidential Election, Nov 5th 2024

Sadly I think you’re right, politics has changed forever and now MAGA have got hold there’s no way in hell they will give it up, the next election they will say it’s stolen again or change the rules so they do win, the only way Democrats get back in is if the economy tanks again.

Thing is, once in power there really isn’t that many hiding places. If they do implement everything they say they’re going to do then they’ll fuck the country up that much they won’t be in power for a long time. If they don’t implement it as they meet the constraints in the real world, some of their base start to leave them.

The same person?? He's a far, far, far WORSE person and Kamala got smashed. That's my point.

Seeing this result, do you really believe Biden now would have won had there not been a one-in-100 year pandemic? Then Trump claimed the entire election was a fraud and then sat around while 1/6 happened and became a felon. And he won in a landslide.

As I said -- it will take a depression.
Trump is a worse person than he was four years ago? He's been a nightmare for as long as I can remember.

I do think Biden would have won in 2020 even without the pandemic. In anything resembling his prime he was a far more skilled politician than Kamala. But we can talk hypotheticals all day, neither of us really know.

Regardless of where the economy is, one chamber will end up flipping. It’s a historical reality. Almost without fail the part in the White House loses some seats. It’s much easier done in the house as there are more seats and they are much easier to flip.

I mean in the 2026 mid terms. The American electorate seem to like this arrangement the last 30 years or so.

Trump will find a way to blame Democrats and people will believe him. Remember the government shutdown over the budget in his last term? He blamed that squarely on the Dems, when it was his own party trying to tag legislation on the budget bill to try and mess around with the ACA.

You might get it if he enacts his economic policies.

I take it you an Irish people?

Then i salute you people for being one of very few western nation that consistent on what happening around Palestine.
The government reflected the mood of the people. They have polled well recently when announcing a general election at the end of the month. I would say this stance did them no harm.

Why?

Because the candidate who won is willing to lie, cheat and steal at the expense of anyone and everyone else to win -- his entire life -- and nearly everyone else save a few on his coattails/in his orbit aren't.

Back to what I've brought up before: the Keyser Soze playbook. You don't need money, or guns or people. You just need the will to do what the other person won't.

So until a Democrat -- or Democrats -- decide to lower themselves to a similar level, they will never match up. Nor by the way will any Republicans who don't (look at the dozens with tremendous experience and a direct working relationship who refused to endorse him -- they are now out, forever). The blueprint has been drawn up -- written in stone, actually. In 2016, it was different. There were plenty of questions about Trump would be. This time there are none. And he won by a landslide.

What policy set, what personality, can ever match up with someone willing to be who Trump is and do what he has done to win?

None can. None ever will. There is no way to defeat it now, not after this. MAGA has won; traditional conservatives will be even more marginalized and disappear entirely; Vance will win the nomination in 2028, probably with Don Jr. as VP and win in a walk in any economic scenario other than depression.

Well if that is the reason why let me ask you this. You know all this about Trump, his tactics, his propaganda etc. are you in a privileged position to know this? Are you directly involved in politics so have a deeper insight than the common man? Are you smarter than everyone else? I imagine the answer is no. You’re like most people. So if you know this about trump, I know this about trump, why don’t the masses in America? The answer is the majority do. They just don’t care, because they have other priorities.

And it’s those priorities that you have to try and understand because simply taking the moral high ground isn’t working is it.

Why don't Ireland pull all trade out of the US if they're so concerned about the Palestinian issue? This is where the disconnect between populations exist.

The vast majority of people are shocked about what's happening in the Middle East but largely it does not affect them so they're not going to demand to impoverish themselves over it. Therefore that issue is irrelevant really because the flights will continue and the trade will continue.

I know this doesn't apply to Ireland but certainly the UK gained very little from the last administration so it doesn't really matter either way. It certainly doesn't help that the starting pistol for the UK-Trump relationship is that the Labour Party is on record as going so far as to actively campaign against Trump in this election.
Can’t say I disagree with you but we have vocal Euro politicians that have called for those very sanctions that you suggest.
We are still part of the EU and going alone is never going to happen.
The Shannon stopovers are a bone of contention with a lot of people, and it has to be said, there is conflict of messages being transmitted when America is backed and Palestine and a duel state solution is also.

However that message is backed by the population at large.

I won’t go into the obvious reasons for the Irish view. I tried that in the Israel thread but it just got toxic in there.
