It's a one party state without elections, I'd guess that would be the main reason we don't get coverage of their erm elections.

I can. Appointments to government positions and the national assembly are made by the CPC (ruling party). Hong Kong are allowed to elect their own representatives under the terms of the treaty between the UK and China for it being returned to Chinese control, but there were riots there a couple of years ago when only CPC members were allowed to stand as candidates. Crazily enough, that got wall to wall coverage on the news, just like the US election.Please pour all you know about Chinese politics on me?

I suppose it depends on your political viewpoint. That's certainly what the Americans are arguing whilst the Russians and Syrian administration are considering going to the UN.
