Our trip a few years back was great.

Flew into vegas - 3 nights at the Bellagio and booked a Grand Canyon trip.

Then drove out through Death Valley and stayed at Furness Creek ( you need to book this place in advance)

Up to San Francisco, which is a great city to spend some time in.

Then down Highway 101 - Monteray, I wasn't impressed by, but the rest was great. This is the Big Sur trip and the scenery is just amazing. Loads of places to stop, we saw seals, eagles, peregrine falcons, ottters, whales, even a dead shark! Also stopped at two vineyards.

Stopped at Santa Monica for 5 nights and visited Hollywood, LA city, Universal studios, Getty museum etc. from there. Santa Monica is just an easier place to be than LA proper. Been there a few times and it's just too full on and false.

Then we drove back to vegas. Stayed one night and flew home to Manchester.

It was a top trip.

Did you do any of them mental rides at the top of the Statosphere hotel?

The Skyshot! The one that goes straight up. It was great.

Thought about that over the edge thing, but the wife started cying when I joined the queue. She was convinced I would be killed ( I think).

Also did the New York roller coaster which was tame in comparison.

Did you get up there?

Haven't been yet pal.Was supposed to go there next year for my Neice's wedding but she's getting married in Mexico now.Next couple of years we'll take the kids to Florida, then I'll probably look to go later on.Really want to see San Fransisco first to be honest.

Cheers guys,

Possible option of just getting an RV and seeing where the wind takes us! Although im cautious of where you are allowed to park them etc!

Cheers again

Two books that might help are-Road Trip USA by Jamie Jensen, published by Avalon Travel, ISBN-10:1-56691-766-2 or ISBN-13:978-1-56691-766-7 (don't know why it has two ISBNs)

and Frommer's Exploring America by RV by Shirley Slater and Harry Basch, publishers Wiley Publishing, ISBN 978-0-470-18404-2
this latter book is great on RV dos and don'ts, hints and tips, and details of campsites/RV parks.

off on a similar trip myself. In Vegas for 3 days over the weekend, any suggestions reccomendations? (an not the smart arse who says leave etc).

I have heard the rehab pool party at the hard rock casino is pretty mental?

I'd add a (day?) trip from SF up to the Napa Valley, esp. the Copolla Niebaum Estate and try to include Sequioa to drive through that tree that they always had on Blue Peter. There's a great lodge for overnighting in Yosemite. Carmel has some great little places to stay. If in LA avoid the stars tours...utter shite.

I've never been to the states, but I have done lots of RVing in Canada, here are some tips that hold true everywhere I've been.
You can park for free overnight in most Walmart parking lots, just double check at customer service, so you don't get a ticket.
As for during the day, it's probably easier to park at the far end of any parking lot, less chance of accidents. Some places might have signs about where you are supposed to park a larger vehicle or a time limit, other than that it shouldn't be a problem.
If your RV has a toilet, only go #1 in it, and have a plan of where you are going to dump it. There are facilities at most camp grounds/RV parks and at some gas stations/truck stops. Also it will stink if it is hot out.
Make sure nothing breakable is left on the counter or table, the first corner you go around it will probably end up on the floor, and broken. Same goes for on the ground, it will slide across the floor if it has a smooth surface.
It is nice to have an RV, you can stop at a rest spot or parking lot and have lunch or take a nap.
Make sure when you are going around corners take them a bit wide, remember there is a bit more behind you than in a car.

It's a fun way to travel. I like it more than staying in hotels.

KOA's are normally a bit more expensive than other camp sites.
2 links to the visit California website with stuff on RVing. http://www.visitcalifornia.com/AM/Template.cfm?Section=Places_To_Stay&ContentID=4298 andhttp://www.visitcalifornia.com/AM/Template.cfm?Section=getting_around&ContentID=4297

If your going down the California coastline, stop at a place called Pismo Beach. It is amazing, real california in my opinion. there is an RV park there aswell with lots of facilities including shop, pool, rental stuff. Its called Pismo Coast Village Recreational Vehicle Resort. Ive stayed there and its a great location. Why stay in a walmart car park when you can stay here!!!

Santa Babara
San Francisco
Lake Tahoe
Las Vegas

Can not fucking wait!!!! Hopefully have one or two new signings by the time i get back!!
