Uwe Rosler - top guy but how do we rate him as a player?

As echoed by others not quite very top class but a decent premiership striker nonetheless.

The fact he gave his all every game and obviously is now one of us in fan terms ( love it when he is on the TV and to refers to City as "we") endears him to our fans and rightly so.

We are fortunate to have had better, but rarely have we had one so committed to the shirt.

Uwe was a very good striker but not quite up there with the very best in his position.Whether he'd have been even better in a side better than City in those days is hard to predict.Although he played in the champions league eventually for Kaiserslautern(and scored iirc) he didn't establish himself as a top striker elsewhere.
Uwe is a legend here because he bought into the club and the country, and made a big effort ,rather like Zabs now.

Didn't he score a hat-trick for Lautern in the Champions' League?

He was just what we needed at the time, and he did a fantastic job for us under Horton.

Uwe is one of my favourite players. I think it was his never-say-die attitude that endeared him to the City supporters.

I don't think many players came out of the 95/96 relegation season with glowing references. Kinkladze did and at a push maybe Lomas.

I seem to remember he did allot better the 2nd half of the 96/97 season when Frank Clark came in.

His best season, like many have said, was the 94/95 season.

Not that good. His hero status comes from a time we were desperate to worship anybody. He wasn't quick enough to be a top drawer striker but he was strong and committed and got a few goals. He wouldn't get near our current team at the moment but might get in somewhere like villa or west ham.

Light in darkness.
Cult status.
One of our adopted own.
Club legend.
One of a select bunch of all time Mr Nice footballers.
Workhorse.
Eentertainer.

He was a reasonable Premier League player at the time.

His status at City does not derive from him having wonderful ability but the warm affection in which he is held is merited all the same.

One of my favourite memories of him was after we played away at Wolves. I was in the players lounge after the game - a colleague had a cousin that played for Wolves - and Rosler was in there. During the match, Uwe had been denied a goal scoring opportunity due to a foul by Steve Sedgley, who was duly sent off by Mark Halsey. When Sedgley walked into the lounge, Uwe promptly put his arm in the air and brandished an imaginary red card and gave Sedgely a bit of good natured stick.

On a side note, Kevin Horlock scored from the resulting free kick but a late Paul Simpson special denied City a win and an additional two points that might have kept us up.
