Because the game is 75% judgement. Somneone needs to judge it, not some computer or lines or algorithm. It needs strong refereeing making a clear call on if something is offside or is so negligable it doesnt matter.

Fouls - Referee judges it
handball penalties - Referee judges it
Offside - Ref judges

1 person should be making the decisions, AND, we have to trust him

With VAR, they get two chances to get it right, I have no issue with that.
When they take the opportunity to get it wrong twice, that is the problem.
Most of the problems are because the officials are taking direction from a bunch of tozzers , who were themselves shite referees.

Could you go and find some, then, quickly, because the current crop are just not fit for purpose.

The problem is NOT that we need stronger referees, it's that we need referees who are prepared to referee the game in accordance with the Laws as written down. They don't. We all know and see that a game is refereed differently depending on where the match is played, who the opposition are, the importance of the match, and, most importantly, who the referee is.
It's been getting steadily worse since the money came in via the PL startup and the advent of PiGMOL. It doesn't help when the hierarchy in the PL come out with statements suggesting it would be better to have different winners regularly, or that a successful ********* would be good for selling the "product" overseas. Then came VAR. It's almost as if it's been stage managed to get the desired results so far.
I wonder what they've got in store for us in the near future? One thing is for sure, It won't involve too much technology:

they can't control that.

It's clear to me that there is no definitive answer to most decisions. Everyone has a different opinion and view and interpretation. They will never get consistent refereeing because it isn't achievable. It's a myth.

doesn't var also check after a goal is scored anyway ?
Despite what comes out from PiGMOL, the PL and the FArce, who knows what VAR checks. We have some narrative about how VAR works but in the absence of any kind of the most simplistic transparency, we don't see the footage and so we can be sold a bottle of snake oil. The message 'VAR checking for red card, VAR checking for offside, Var checking for handball must be among the biggest insults in world sport.

I watched the challenge cup final on Saturday- reffed by a 25 year old. Every decision in rugby league is 100% transparent to everyone - players and spectators. The ref is miced up so you can hear what his train of thought is, what he is checking and why. He asks for clips of action to be rolled backwards and forwards repeatedly until happy with decision. The ref is 100% accountable for all decisions - not some anonymous guy sat remotely. He justifies why he made the decision. All super league grounds have suitable screens. It could be perfect for football - however, 2 clubs refuse to have such large screens in stadium - rags and dippers - I wonder why... maybe the dippers will change their minds now?
