VAR - 2020/21

13.

Should have been a pen then, on that basis.
Yep, and in pre var days supporters would be pissed off with the ref missing it.
Now we have var to spot these things, and when the ref, assistant, var ref and var ref's boss ignore them then that feeling of being pissed off turns into something more. The spectre of cheating, bentness, favouritism or just plain old spectacular incompetence raises its head.

Don't mention Shaw's (i think) non handball for a pen in the same game either..

You'll never make an elite referee then.
3 of them thought it wasn't, despite all this modern technology.

My Mark 1 eyeball saw the incident first time round, and my immediate thought was PENALTY. But then my second thought was "this is Martin Atkinson at Old Toilet. A Chelsea player has just been wrestled to the ground in the box by Maguire at a Chelsea corner - a clear penalty. Will he referee according to the LotG, or will he and his accomplices obey the script and say no penalty?"

We all saw what happened.

Until we get complete transparency in the decision making process, including FULL ACCESS to the discussions between the officials, as there is in every other sport using VAR, football will always have the stench of corruption hanging over it.

The Kingston Stink was nothing compared to what's going on in football.

The flaw in the Maguire incident must lie with VAR.
VAR's job is to flag potential fouls to the ref, who in turn should check it on the monitor.

Onfield officials didn't give it, so either they saw it and thought it not a foul, or they didn't see it. We don't know the answer to that.
We do know that the ref was not advised to review it - that's a complete failure of the system, as there is no way it can be viewed as not being an error.

Here is my take on yesterday's farce at the swamp. The Var man knew the Magliar foul was a penalty but also knew he couldn't give it. For that reason the review took 30 seconds to make it look legit.
For the Rag one, they weren't reviewing anything. They were arguing. One official said give it, the second said that if they did they would look so foolish it would expose the whole charade and any doubters would now accept that it was bent.
In the end they realised that there was imply no way they could give the Rags yet another bent decision without being made to look like , well corrupt officials.

How do we know that even if the ref had been advised to review it, he would have done so ?

Lack of transparency is the issue , and PiGMOL's resistence can only increase the suspicions of corruption or bias.

The Maguire incident was a clear penalty which was not given .

If that is the case, that's an awful lot of people involved in the covering up of blatant corruption without anyone breaking ranks.

Can you honestly think of a good reason for not making the referee's discussion with the VAR operative open to the supporters as done in rugby / cricket etc ?
