Can you honestly think of a good reason for not making the referee's discussion with the VAR operative open to the supporters as done in rugby / cricket etc ?

To @ MillionMilesAway - by the lack of reaction to that post, as opposed to my first post, I guess your answer is NO

No, I can't, although I don't think it's necessary (see below). It would immediately convey some of the abuse from the players, but that's not a huge problem. It may be that it's a FIFA rule - I don't know if it's done in other countries, but it certainly isn't done in major tournaments.

Football is intransigent, and "how things are done" is difficult to fix. It took years before cricket was satisfied with their own system, and even a few years ago rugby still had problems with making things understood; I think there is a perception of how long each other sport got their act together. It's a work in progress.

Maguire's is as impossible to answer as the Pickford one last week - there shouldn't be a grey area on either. These should absolutely be explained afterwards by PGMOL, just as the midweek last season where there were 3 in an evening that PGMOL commented on were wrong - that would do without needing the replay of conversation.

Am I right in saying since they changed their approach to viewing the monitor, every single time they have agreed with the var team?

It's almost certain to go that way - if it gets to the point of VAR saying "you should look at that again", it's already passed the "clear and obvious error" threshold, and should just be confirmatory. Presumably it lets the ref explain what he's seen himself on the monitor.

I agree with the posters on here who want transparency, it isnt good enough to have faceless decision makers miles away "overseeing" the big incidents in games with no explanation for their "decisions". How about they are filmed and sound recorded and a copy of such is given to each club post game.

This would enable the club that feels hard done by to question var decisions having seen/heard the var "personnel" in action. It would also mean that the var team would have to work knowing they are under scrutiny, in my opinion this should be par for the course when such important issues as footy rules are at stake, and maybe decisions might not be decided so lightly as some seem to be atm.

If they cant decide in a reasonable time, then they should have the right to "order" the ref to view it on screen and decide. At least this way some one is responsible. As it stands, the ref can wrongly award a pen, var dont deem it a strong enough "error of judgement" and the wrong decision is upheld???? This just should not happen as it shows var to be more about game control than getting it right, but maybe thats its purpose anyway?

But we know that PiGMOL first inclination is to cover their arses and not wanting to expose referees " failures " - even if genuine errors have taken place. When there are comments post incident , the reason nearly always seek to protect the decisions made, when to most fair minded observers, they are wrong.

That can't be for the overall good of the game imo , and the intransigence lays them open to criticism and suggestions of corruption from supporters .

The fact that the rags benefitted from yet another ( blatant imo ) decision certainly doesn't help the credibility of our referee/VAR system .

But I am willing to bet that making the decisions/ conversations audible to supporters will be the very last resort by the PL/FA/PiGMOL and we can disagree on their motives.

The flaw in the Maguire incident must lie with VAR.
VAR's job is to flag potential fouls to the ref, who in turn should check it on the monitor.

Onfield officials didn't give it, so either they saw it and thought it not a foul, or they didn't see it. We don't know the answer to that.
We do know that the ref was not advised to review it - that's a complete failure of the system, as there is no way it can be viewed as not being an error.
It was a foul. At least 3 officials offered the wrong conclusion. I don't think it was a mistake.

The real question here is why?

Follow the money.

I have never heard Peter Walton disagree with a referee.
If a former professional referee does not want to embarrass his EX colleagues, what chance do we have when they interchange between, VAR, refereeing and 4th Official duties. They see each other week after week, they are mates, they are never going to make one of them look stupid.

We need referees, ideally from the lower leagues with no allegiances to PiGmob to undertake VAR revues. Only then will be get somewhere near honesty.

I don't like that the PL are trying to persuade FIFA to allow 'leeway' in tight offsides.

It sounds ok in principle but we all know what it really means: all ours are offside but a rag or scouser 20cm offside will now be given leeway.
