Quite. But even if they changed the rules and used the last point of contact with the passer's foot, I'd be okay with it as long as they always used that frame. And as long as it's applied consistently, I'm okay with wherever the line is drawn - right now the law says it's the furthest forward part of the body that can score, so if Sterling's armpit is a mm offside, I'm okay with the goal being ruled out. If they changed it to 'daylight', I'd be okay with that too, but there's still going to be times when there's a mm of daylight, so the player's a mm offside again. And I know that with all the errors in the system, you can't really measure things to the nearest mm, but if you decide the player has to be 10 mm offside just to be sure, there'll be goals where he's 11 mm offside, so your still ruling him offside by 1 mm.

Note richardtheref on here who is fully qualified is quite clear that the laws says that the top of the arm/shoulder is handball and that it shouldn’t have been used for the offside call.

This is one of the many rules that needs to be a lot more precise in the VAR era. Using the deltoid muscle at the top of the arm has always been okay in my viewing and playing experience (e.g. Balotelli v Villa), but it doesn't seem to be used in offside decisions.

I don’t think they’re saying they got the call wrong. They got it right by the current rules. It would be much better to therefore change the law or the interpretation of the law.

no doubt in my mind that he goes to ignore the penalty and let west ham play on....look at his body shape, he turns and takes a step backwards.....then realises he can't because of VAR

I thought it looked a bit strange, particularly for Dean.

Possibly the linesman flagged? He'd be on this side, and Dean's step back makes him look in his direction.
I haven't seen an angle showing whether it's true.
