I wasn’t going to say it, as I hadn’t seen that angle so couldn’t be sure, but this does support my belief that VAR will be largely implemented and used in order to allow them to maintain plausible deniability in still getting certain calls wrong, when it suits them.
In this case, I said at the time to a mate that they were oddly only prominently showing the one angle to Cakir that made it very difficult to discern if it his arm. There were about 5 others available and they only showed two on his screen, and he ignored the other one (which was also a better angle), instead discussing the dubious one with the VAR official via his mic.
And save this post: when faced with this evidence, and having reviewed with VAR, they will just say something to the effect of “well, we only have a limited time to review and cannot look at all of the angles; we depend on the VAR team to highlight the best camera angles to review.”
We didn’t lose tonight because of VAR, but it certainly didn’t help us.
