Var debate 2019/20

Really can see myself falling out of love with the game.
I felt like that.
Ironic isn't it we had all those years in the wilderness when we won nowt, all we did was laugh and moan a bit.
Now we have the best side the prem has ever seen, and var is dividing us. Who the fuck cares? I couldn't care less I just enjoy the quality on display. Ignore the shite and enjoy the football. We are more than good enough to piss this league

Spot on. Games a bogey mate.

It’s not VAR itself it’s the way it’s being applied. It should be used to rectify clear and obvious errors which we all thought it would.
We were told that the on pitch ref would still have the final say wherever possible, as was the case in the WC when I thought it worked quite well. It appears that is not the case either.

Bringing in this nonsensical handball rule at the same time as VAR is just stupid beyond words, and for some reason this is one of the occasions along with offside when the on field ref’s decision will not take precedence.

And wouldn't that be something.
Win the league with 100 perfect VAR approved goals, maybe that's the new dream!? Good/bad decisions always seemed to even out, and that was part of the game! We will tally up VAR decisions as the season goes on, who wants to bet against this, I say we have more against us that cost points than the media darlings combined? Ones in our favour will be pointless game over already ones? We will see. My verdict is in, it ruins the game and is bent as fuck

We need a simple song with a strong message about how we feel on being shafted by VAR. Something easy to sing, quirky and unique.....

To Rock The Casbah/The Clash

Our Sheikh said he don't like it
(Said)fuck the bent var, fuck the bent var

Our Sheikh don't like it
fuck the bent var, fuck the bent var

Our Sheikh don't like it
fuck the bent var, fuck the bent var

Sung with a two fingered salute to a officialdom

Thoughts?

Would probably still watch on tv, but whats the point in going to games when you can’t even celebrate properly?

You are probably correct in your prediction, and it is ruining the game as we see it but we are only 2 games into a long season. My point is we are too good a side to let it worry us yet. I'd be more worried if I was managing a side that hadn't won a league title for 30 years. I'm not convinced Klopp is rubbing his hands thinking var will help him win the title.
In the same way pep knows he won't retain it just because of var.

I would rather go with:
“You can stick your fucking VAR up your arse.
Oh you can stick your fucking VAR up your arse
Stick your fucking VAR, Stick your fucking VAR
Stick your fucking VAR up your arse!!”
Trad.. arr Bumbleblue

the new rule where a keeper has to have one foot on his line was not adhered to the other night when Liverpool won the super cup. var could easily had a look at that. can you imagine Liverpool not getting a penalty for the assault on rodri in the 1st half I cant. or Liverpool having a similar goal disallowed to the jesus one today no chance .

Pardon my ignorance, but if the ball had slightly grazed the arm of the Tottenham player, and then we scored, would the goal have been disallowed by VAR? That was what KDB seemed to say after the game.

No because the advantage rule would be applied. In any event it wouldn’t be handball as his hand was not in an unnatural position.

The real injustice lies in the fact that a goal can be disallowed for accidental handball by the attacking team whereas if it doesn’t lead to a goal it still has to be intentional. Also if the defender accidentally touches the ball on the arm it cannot be a penalty (providing that his arm is in a natural position). So the attaching team cannot benefit from accidental handball in the box, the defending team can. Different interpretations of handball now apply depending on whether it’s the defending or attacking team and whether it leads to a goal or not.

If the same thing happened whilst Laporte was on the halfway line and the ref had seen it then no free kick would have been given as it wasn’t intentional.

You could make a case for saying the handball rule needed clarifying in relation to when penalties are given. However this new rule which disallows any goal where there is contact with the arm by the attacking team whether accidental or not, is just change for change’s sake and needs to be reversed ASAP.

Thanks for clarifying all that. There are now clearly different interpretations for the attacker and defender. You can guarantee that we will get penalty calls denied this season when the defenders have handled the ball with his arm ‘in the natural position’. It’s bizarre when the rules are more generous to the defending team, rather than the attacking team.

VAR is the worst thing happened to football. And I am all for technology, but please keep your corrupt technology from ruining the spontaneity of the game that I have been enjoying for years and years. Refs’ mistakes have been a traditional part of the game everywhere, and mostly will even by the end of the season. But these mistakes didn’t stopped the flow and speed of the game. VAR is painful to watch not only for the match-going fans but for those who watch the game on TV as well.

I totally agree with you. This s..t will kill the beautiful game as we knew it. Some people don’t realize that as long as it is run by humans, who are still incompetent or corrupt, it will not do much to change the current problems, apart from killing the momentum and the flow of the game.

Some people are stubborn and just refuse to get it. VAR is run by humans who could be inept and/or corrupt. Unlike the ref and linemen, they are hiding inside a room, which makes it much easier for them to f**k any team they choose. VAR is the beginning of the end of the beautiful game. It is the hypocrisy of football governing authorities to show they are “modernizing” football to follow American style of sports. American sports; American football, ice hockey, baseball, and basketball, are so dumb boring because of VAR and similar tools used all the time.

VAR presents the opportunity for the laws to be applied more within the spirit of the game, because replays can identify nuances that can be missed at full speed. “Michael, the ball grazed Laporte’s arm, which was in a natural position completely unintentionally after he legitimately challenged for the ball with his head. He didn’t gain control of the ball afterwards, so it was an innocuous ricochet.”

Instead, it’s being used to hyper-legislate, which undermines the whole premise because the technology cannot be 100% accurate (players blocking certain angles, figuring out when the ball is played etc).

Deliberate handball remains an offence
• The following ‘handball’ situations, even if accidental, will be a free kick:
• the ball goes into the goal after touching an attacking player’s hand/arm
• a player gains control/possession of the ball after it has touches their hand/arm and then scores, or creates a goal-scoring opportunity
• the ball touches a player’s hand/arm which has made their body unnaturally bigger
• the ball touches a player’s hand/arm when it is above their shoulder (unless the player has deliberately played the ball which then touches their hand/arm)
Am I missing something here or do these rules state that our goal shouldn't have been ruled out?
• the ball goes into the goal after touching an attacking player’s hand/arm - a goal directly from a handball Llorente style?

• a player gains control/possession of the ball after it has touches their hand/arm and then scores, or creates a goal-scoring opportunity - Laporte never gained control/possesion of the ball

• the ball touches a player’s hand/arm which has made their body unnaturally bigger
• the ball touches a player’s hand/arm when it is above their shoulder (unless the player has deliberately played the ball which then touches their hand/arm) - neither are applicable

Does anybidy even know the handball rules anymore? It's all so vague at the moment it's frankly ridiculous.
