You ever have a match in the background on whilst your busy doing other stuff ?

Have you got a clip of this dive ? which he didn't get awarded a penalty anyway...so err.. what's the issue? already stated players should be booked for diving (that's on the ref) ...before VAR a ref could point to the spot... you seem to want to go back to that.
The issue for me is why no card for blatant dive

You think VAR is great though so it wasn’t really a good day for you yesterday if opinion is it was a definite pen?

It's just the same tired old argument that referees and VAR can't win because fans always have a problem with decisions that go against them. That's not new. I remember screaming at the referee as a youngster in the 60s. It has always been so, and it will always be so, whether there is VAR or not. It matters not one jot in the argument about what VAR brings to the game.

I'm sorry, it hasn't. It used to be simply that VAR had cut out diving.

After some high profile incidents a couple of months ago, you changed to no-contact diving. And you know as well as I do, if someone dives with minimal contact and the referee gives it, then VAR won't intervene. If the referee doesn't give it, VAR won't intervene. So what's the difference? It's up to the referee to referee competently and consistently.

As for no-contact diving, there have always been ways to eliminate that by punishment in-game or retrospectively. Again, it's a question of competence and consistency.

And, once more, if we learned anything about Oliver yesterday, it was that he can referee a high-profile game reasonably competently and consistently. Which is all we can ask for.

Did Salah dive and get awarded a penalty ?

before VAR do you think there is a chance Salah could have been awarded a penalty despite diving ?

I think yesterday, it's possible Salah could have been awarded a penalty and VAR wouldn't have changed it.

It wasn't VAR that stopped that from happening. It was the referee doing his job properly.

but prior VAR a ref could have awarded a pen wrongly and there would be zero chance of it being overturned.

anyone got a clip of this incident? can't see it being mentioned anywhere.

yes, i've never argued against that.

Only ever said there's far less chance of a penalty being awarded by a clear dive nowadays with VAR than there was prior.

It depends what you mean by a clear dive. You mean a dive where there was no risk to the player and no contact, a dive where there was a risk of a collision but
no contact, or a dive where there was minimal contact but embellishment?

In the first case, I can grant you that VAR should be able to correct that, but punishments can be handed out in-game or retrospectively without VAR to reduce that. The other two cases, which are the vast majority I would imagine, I am not so sure. I think VAR would normally support the referee's decision, so what's the difference?

It's a bit of a VAR sledgehammer to crack a nut of a problem, as it is with offsides and handballs imo.

so he didn't get awarded a penalty?
before VAR , a ''corrupt'' ref could/would have pointed to the spot .

My position has always been it's far more difficult to award a player clearly diving with no contact a penalty nowadays with VAR , before VAR any ref could just point to the spot.
Errr, ever heard of Diogo Jota?
