There's certain players who would have had at least a yellow for the grabbing action e.g. Rodri and probably, the MUFC/Madrid poison dwarf.
For some reason, the venerable Virgil escapes scot-free.
If LFC lost their captain, it would massively hurt them - so he will continue to be immune from punishment, until Klippetty trots off...

The only thing in Virgin's favour is that it happened as they were preparing to defend a corner, other than that (and even then) I can see no reason at all for no red card.

He’s certainly lucky. I’m sure there’s plenty of similar incidents that have resulted in red cards. For City fans, obviously the Rodri one immediately comes to mind.

As for your question as to whether the VAR should have intervened? I don’t think it will officially go down as a missed intervention. Whether it should do or not is a matter of opinion.

It’s probably one that’s staying with the onfield decision either way in the majority of cases.

Thank you for sharing.

I am trying to recall, was Rodri’s a straight red issued by the referee or did VAR intervene to have the referee review the incident which then lead to the referee sending Rodri off?

I'd rather dick van dyke play rather than miss a match, other than the occasional header threat he's gone back a mile.
Always looking to blame those around him rather than taking the responsibility.

I’m ( almost ) certain that the referee, Taylor I think, showed the red card immediately to Rodri. And there’s no way the VAR is getting involved in an incident like that one, once the referee has done that.

What about retrospective action then a la Balotelli and Sergio? I know it's Anfield we're talking about here...

"VIOLENT CONDUCT

Violent conduct is when a player uses or attempts to use excessive force or brutality against an opponent when not challenging for the ball, or against a team-mate, team official, match official, spectator or any other person, regardless of whether contact is made.

In addition, a player who, when not challenging for the ball, deliberately strikes an opponent or any other person on the head or face with the hand or arm, is guilty of violent conduct unless the force used was negligible."

Q - Does it take negligible force to push a Premier League striker to the floor by his neck?

A - Now-a-days, probably yes

For me it's violent conduct all day every day, and if the ref didn't fully see it and just saw a tussle before a corner (like at every corner) then there needs to be either an intervention by VAR or at the very least a discussion with the VAR as to what the on-field ref actually saw.

But we're back to the old "transparency will only be achieved when the officials are mic-ed up and their conversations are broadcast live" territory again

Has there been anyone charged retrospectively since VAR came in?

I can’t recall one.

I’m sure it’s still a procedure that is available to them. But once it’s been cleared by the referee and the VAR on the day, I think it’s a bit unlikely.
