VAR (PL introduction 2019)

The more I think about the challenge proposal, the more I think it's a compromise I could seriously get on board with. I've been watching City for over 35 years now and I don't feel cheated when the opposition scores a goal that a replay shows was 6 inches offside. I have a moan then accept it's part of the game and just get on with it.
.

and if that goal denied you a win in a cup final ? or the title ? or a defeat to Liverpool ?

you may be able to brush it off, but majority of fans will be going mental in the stands, booing the ref off, bombarding forums saying the ref is corrupt and then the pundits make it the main talking point - if everyone had your blase attitude and could accept a ref gets it wrong on the odd occasion then we wouldn't be in a situation where VAR was required.

There is a big Ref element in this of course. My bet is that we will see some Refs that use it a lot, and some hardly at all. Watched most of the the USA v Spain World Cup game last night, the Ref awarded 2 penalties and I don't think she used VAR once.
Apart from the time she spent three minutes reviewing a penalty that shouldn't have been given but she stuck to her guns. Biggest fault with the World Cup refs is that they aren't good enough and are using VAR as a method of trying to justify their shit decisions. Then you have the VAR officials trying to justify their existence. The penalty for Canada was correctly not given as surely when the ball hit her arm it was by her side yet VAR tell her to have a look and lo and behold it's a penalty

This was probably posted when it was first published two weeks ago, but it perfectly sums up my feelings about what we are about to invite into the game. I also understand why people such as yourself want it brought in; we simply appreciate and prioritise two completely different aspects of the game: me, the overall experience; you, the need for all decisions to be right.

I urge you to read the article in full if you haven't already, because it will at least help you see the other side and understand the inherent flaws that people such as myself see in VAR. I don't expect either of us to change our opinions on this, but I will dispute your suggestion that VAR will actually enhance the euphoria of the watching public. As the article says:

Fun is what I value above all else when it comes to watching football. Ultimately, I want to enjoy myself. But my experience of VAR already tells me that my potential for enjoyment is going to be greatly reduced by its presence.
Excellently put, and with more patience than i could muster

Can only give my own opinion as I see it. I certainly don't claim to speak for anyone else.

And, yes, I'd take a cup final defeat to a goal that was marginally offside if it means we get to keep the spontaneity and explosion of emotions that have made football the most popular sport in the world.

I've explained several times to you that our priorities lie at completely different ends of the spectrum, so there's no scenario you can throw at me that is suddenly going to change my mind.

fair points, i couldn't accept a offside goal that lost my team a final when we have the resources to get the correct decision.

You wouldn't need to with a challenge system. If the captain thinks there's a hint of offside he can have it reviewed.

What I don't want is this current nonsense where perfectly good goals are scored and we all have to wait around for confirmation from the VAR that he's not found any reason to disallow it.

The players know when there's been an injustice so leave it to them to decide when incidents are reviewed.

That way, you get the right decisions and I still get to enjoy goals being scored. It seems like a sensible compromise to me.

You mean like now?

It doesn’t though, does it? The tech is nowhere near enough developed to get offsides right. The obvious ones maybe, but not all the ones it will be used for

A, its way too slow, and looks like it won't get appreciably quicker.
They could enforce the clear and obvious part by giving the refs 30 seconds from the beginning of the replay to overrule the onfield decision.

Oh and prosecuting when they still make a clear and obvious error that favours a G14 club or media favourite.
