VAR (PL introduction 2019)

They’re not trying to make the game fairer, they’re buckling under the pressure to implement technology they didn’t want in the first place.
Everything we’ve seen so far is the authorities trying to figure out a way of implementing VAR to keep people sweet whilst maintaining their ultimate control of the rules, the interpretation of the rules and the enforcement of the rules.

Then when they fuck up, they can use the new technology to cover their useless arses.

I'm surprised that the referees go along with the way they're being told to use it. If I was a ref, I'd want the process to be like it is in other sports. That way I would be seen and heard to be on the level. I wouldn't want all this secrecy around the process. It casts doubt on their integrity. They've had scandals in Italy and Germany. I'd want to be above suspicion.
The refs go along with it because of m o n e y

Introduce a margin of error for offsides and call it Linesmans' call and have a couple of reviews that teams can call (like cricket) and i may warm to it but it hasnt changed anything in the matches we should have had pens in so i guess the dice will still be loaded as the media will decide which injustices to kick up a fuss about....

Can anybody explain how VAR is currently operated.
  • How many cameras do they use, and where are they positioned.
  • Are the cameras actually the broadcasters ones where matches are televised.
  • How many people assess the images and do they have ultra slow motion and magnification at their disposal.
  • How do they decide how to draw the line for offside decisions this must be mathematically difficult because of position and height of the camera.
  • Does VAR have a purpose built site to operate from - at one match they said it was being operated from a van in the car park.
  • Why is there no screen for the match officials at the stadiums, I suppose they don't want to be overlooked whilst viewing the evidence.
  • If it becomes standard will their equipment be permanently in place at stadiums and will all the 4 leagues have access to it.
I have no faith in it at present with it being run like an CIA or MI6 operation.

That's exactly why they go along with it, they can do whatever they want, and are then backed by the same idiots in the studio/caravan/headquarters. Its not "on the level", if it was, then the already miked up refs would be telling those in the stadium why a decision is being looked at, they don't want it, nor does the FA, because they FA/refs can create the outcome they want/are asked for.

Unfortunately, some clubs are too good, so their influence is minimal.

A couple of them have come under suspicion but we are still a long way from seeing what's happened in Germany, let alone Italy. Keith Hackett is very critical of the way VAR has been used in England and is also less than complimentary about Mike Riley. However, he is convinced the refs are honest. There have been lots of dodgy incidents but they go back years, decades. The point is that I'm a bit surprised that not one ref has broken ranks if the game is now in the grip of systemic corruption, as many on here claim. Others can be unsurprised if they wish. You'd make a lot of money from a book like that.

They have though, Mark Halsey for instance said he was told to say he'd not seen things in matches. Dermott Gallagher reported the GPC asking him to postpone and call off matches.

Now you'd expect that allegations of that nature would be fully investigated by the FA, wouldn't you. Were they?

All the more strange given that referees have been implicated in corruption in football across the world.

Money talks, these guys don't earn a fortune, there are billions of pounds washing around in football.

I assume from your tone that you think they're on the take above and beyond their fairly unremarkable salary. If so, can you prove that?

Was watching Roma-Milan last night. Suso pushed the ball away from Kolarov inside the box. Kolarov grabbed him and took him down. Without touching the ball. Clear foul. Stonewall.

No penalty was given. VAR wasn’t even used. Baffling.

I haven't seen the incident but perhaps VAR was used but behind the scenes and they told the ref there was nothing in it?

No indication it was used so I doubt it was. Was a clear penalty so I can’t imagine anyone could look at it and say it wasn’t. It was a textbook penalty. I couldn’t believe it as I thought everything in the box should be reviewed.

I think we'd all be slightly naivè if we thought our game was 100% clean. As others have said, way too much money involved for back-handers not to occur somewhere along the line.

Since the formation of the Premier League we have seen one team above all others benefit from dodgy decisions, and we all know who it is. If you look back over the years absolutely any game that it was imperative that this particular team wins, they won. A mid-season game where it didn't really matter they might lose or share the points, but generally speaking if they needed a win they got it.

No amount of arguments to the contrary will ever make me feel that this team were not being favoured by referees and officials within the game.
