Venezuela economy

9 years is most of the last 30 years. Ok.
My point stands the last 30 years has seen Conservative, Social Democratic and Technocratic leaders none of whom could be considered socialist.
There are parties with the name socialist in them, as PSOE in Spain. But don't be mislead. They are like the Labour Party in England.
Not socialist at all.

It's quite amusing that you think that a socialist system ensures better maintenance of infrastructure.
What is much more important is the regulatory environment and level of corruption.

You putting all that down to Capitalism. Might be just technological progress. After all the Soviet Union achieved quite a bit too.

An interesting point as you raised it. Child mortality lower in Cuba than the US.
Do you seriously believe that life in Cuba is better than the US?

No but I believe life in the US could be better if it wasn't so uber capitalist. Selling your house to pay for your cancer treatment doesn't strike me as the mark of a successful country.
Life could be better literally everywhere with this idealist viewpoint.
The fact is that socialism will never deliver the nirvana you wish for, it never has, in fact it creates the complete
opposite, as evidenced by every single place that adopted it.

Not sure it's idealistic to want free health care at the point of use.

Aside from that capitalism has adopted many socialist ideas in order to prevent the sort of thing that happened in 1917.

There are variants of capitalism as there are of socialism. My main problem is that we have moved away from the Scandinavian model towards the American one.

Many of the things we take for granted were socialist ideals. Free education, medicine, maximum working hours.

Do we want a deregulated, dog eat dog society where the weak are reliant on charity.

None of those things are a result of socialism, they are social principles.

The fact is we can implement social principles in a capitalist economy and capitalism complements it because it provides a basis to support it, that is the Scadinavian model.

To say the NHS or any other public service should remain free as a socialist idea is silly because none of it is free and never has been, that is why we pay taxes.

The Jeremy Corbyn socialism is to provide social principles and true socialism yes but how will it be supported when with the other hand he plans to damage and limit the means that has so far supported it?

They are a result of pressure from the (often socialist) left of the political spectrum. To suggest they were given up easily by the establishment right is pure, nonsensical fantasy.
