Venezuela economy

FWIW Wikipedia says 90% of companies and resources are privately owned.

But why the hell did we all start talking about Sweden on a thread about Venezuela ?? More whataboutery ?

As I've already stated the right use Venezuela as the go to for socialism the left ise Sweden.

And again, why have the embargoes on Venezuela not been mentioned and how they've been a huge influence on tue economic downfall of the country?

Not whataboutery and something im still waiting for the OP to answer.

Elect left wing or right wing populists to run the Govt and you will get corruption, cronyism, nepotism and eventually financial ruin.

And yet we still elect the arseholes. People are dumb.

The biggest problem with socialism in the Uk is that most people like the idea but don’t trust the people in power to deliver it or like the idea of actually paying for it.

This is not an extensive survey but in my experience Scandinavian countries and Northern Europe in general seem to have less ****s than good old Blighty. We had 2 roads to go down in the 70’s and neither led anywhere good. We pretty much deserve to be where we are.

That's ideology over rationality though and never works, it ignores the parts of reality that won't suit it and usually alienates half the population to boot. Politics should be working to be inclusive instead of divisive.

Well they tend to get elected once. It's hard to claim that Maduro was actually elected in anything resembling free and fair elections, even if Chavez was still relatively popular when he died.

It'd be interesting to see what would have happened in Venezuela didn't have shitloads of oil though. From what I've read, natural resources tend to be a benefit for countries that have good government institutions to ensure it is used properly, but make corrupt countries much worse. Not to mention the fact that the USA tends to take a sudden interest in your domestic politics when you discover lots of oil.

Tbf to them they have a great amount of room in their hearts for countries with lots of oil. Down to the point of getting rid of pesky elected leaders and completely renovating infrastructure.
