Vienna Shooting

That one did puzzle me, how someone can come to that conclusion baffles me.

These attacks seem to be picking up momentum, Macrons decision to out Islam last week may have caused a war between Islam and Europe. I’ve always had the opinion that we’ve been soft on muslims taking over our communities in Europe. I’ve been classed as racist and a right wing nut pot, but I’m not arsed. I understand that the majority of Muslims don’t practice Islam in full or become extremist, but the more Muslims we let into the Europe, the spread of Islamist extremist will be greater. Fuck knows what the solution is, but I wouldn’t like to be the person that came up with it. Macron stirred up a shit storm, for example.

Macron outed Islamic terrorism, not Islam, he was careful to separate the two, and it even found traction in the Muslim community in France as the main victims of Islamic terrorism worldwide are Muslims.

If France has a core belief then that belief is secularism, and it is a belief that they strongly protect. I have sympathy for it as an atheist with a strong distaste for all religions and despise those who use terror to enforce their brand of religion as they have done in France and now Austria.

Absolutely, but if it's allowed to proceed how do you rate your chances of getting actual debate rather than just increasingly bitter name-calling and abuse?

The direct name-calling's a minority occurrence imo.

The cryptic, passive aggressive ones are more common 'anyone who does/doesn't empathise with x religion/idea/politician/asylum seeker is a ****' but it's a pretty transparent attempt at disagreeing with someone without formulating a logical reason why so should be water off a duck's back for most.

They are probably also the most easily offended and waiting to pounce on the report button too - so you can see the mods problem.

I feel sorry for posters like @ZenHalfTimeCrock who must spend about half and hour on each post, probably arguing stuff that Ric would sympathise with - how everyone's got it wrong about Islam - to see his posts removed when he could actually be changing peoples' minds about whether Islam is inherently violent or not.

Actually, my posts are often cut and pastes from a database of academic quotations that I then used as a basis for the production of course notes on Islam for my students when I used to teach this faith.

I appreciate the sympathy, though.

If that's the case, why not just remove the offending post?

We get hateful posts like that all the time wishing death on people in numerous other threads and the posts get removed: it just smacks of using those posts as a pretext to stop analysis and criticism of the terrorists' motives.

Take it up with the mods, I have no idea but I imagine it is much mre inncocent than you suggest i.e it was gettign heavy and the mods were going to bed

I blame twitter/online debate as it's faceless so makes it easy to demonise the folk you disagree with instead of agreeing to disagree and talking abouts tits or football instead which is probably how these discussions would end if they were face to face over a pint.

Anonymity does seem to be a factor. Studies have shown that people (and children) tend to be more aggressive if their identities are hidden, for example by masks or war paint. More information on this can be found in Philip Zimbardo's book The Lucifer Effect: How Good People Turn Evil.

I just had a scenario run through my head where one mod turned the TV off and they all trundled upstairs with water bottles and cocoa at the same time :)

Either way, I meant it as a compliment.

Half the posters on here can't even be arsed going on Google.

Part of the Bluemoon rules when you sign up to be a mod.

Shared accommodation and they all have to go bed at the same time :)
