No one is proposing stripping him of his choice. It's a decision he (and Yaya) should have come to themselves. I remember him playing for Belgium against our medical advice and crocking himself all over again. There comes a time in every player's career when they need to retire from international football to prolong their top flight career. This is an incredibly self-centred view. Can you quantify education and all the things your birth country give you? From the club's point of view it is probably the best if there were no Euros and international friendlies at all, but you have to respect the player's wish to be patriotic and play for his country at the Euros. May not be good for his long-term health, but paying him £200k pw does not mean we can strip him of such freedom of choice. What the club can do is to arrange for the best care in their power and wait to see if he can recover. Since we will be getting new centre-backs next season, he should have more time to manage his conditions.
That time has come for Kompany. Early it is true, but it has come. He has a choice, get fit over the summer and come back, to fight for his place under a new manager with fresh competition or play for Belgium. If he chooses the latter he cannot be surprised if Pep puts him on the Go list. But I suspect he's on hat list anyway.
I'd prefer a fit and rested Kompany fighting for his place next season because he's by far the best CB we've had since Dave Watsons day.
