The way he was jumping about celebrating his goal where the actions on a man who is trusting his body again. Other times he has come back you can see there was a little doubt if he could jump and land without straining his calf again. If he tackled and over stretched it would result in him coming off. Maybe Pep keeping him back training hard over weeks not days means he's fully got over his injury mind and body.

It's all well and good Vinny rolling back the years to put in a fine display, but does Pep rate him as highly as we do?

I suspect not.

Great to see him back in the form he was at before all those niggling injuries, but for how long is anyone's guess. I really hope he can stay fit and again become the rock he was for us.

Pep's praise for him yesterday was high enough but may have seemed clinical rather than effusive; I just think Pep is very cautious because of Vinnie's injury situation. The fact that Pep through him into the Chelsea game may be a sign of how much he rates him. He also mentioned having eight days to prepare for the semi, so be very interesting to see if he starts that.

Wright and Gerrard were bang on when they said that we'd have won the league by now had he stayed fit. Yesterday our defence was a different animal. It looked like a defence that could win the league.

He's been fit for a while right? Maybe, just maybe, those extra months away from the pitch despite apparently being ready have done that little extra bit of good for him. Bit like Rodwell having the year we didn't bother with him despite being 'fit' has seemingly fixed his injury woes.

Its the hope that kills ya though.

Why's that? He's defensively as good as any centre back Pep has worked with and he's far more positive on the ball than a few seem to think. The only reason I could think that he might not figure in Guardiola's long term plans is if he's still not convinced over Vinnie's ability to stay fit.

Pep must rate his ability and leadership but I suspect he doesn't believe he's capable of playing 30+ games next season

You have basically answered why Vin may not be in Pep's long term plans due to fitness concerns. Also Vinnie isn't getting any younger either.

We are all concerned over his fitness so I don't really think that has anything to do with rating him. Looking at Guardiola's previous teams would also suggest that his age is irrelevant.

My main concern is that if Vinnie can stay fit, Pep won't give him a proper chance for Vinnie to prove himself here. Letting him go to another top level club, to see him playing another 3-5 years would be criminal IMO.

Vinnie's still under contract so he can choose to stay next year and, if he is fit, Pep will play him: he has no reason not to.

Vinnie loves the club, goes without saying really. His goal celebration of all the pent up frustration suddenly released showed that. I doubt he would want to leave unless forced out.

Like most blues, I want him to get back to the Vinnie we once relied on each game. Here's hoping.

Who has said that???

I think it's reasonable for people to of questioned the long term feasibility due to injuries, however, I can't recall many,if any, questioning his ability to play in a 'pep' team..

He's remains the best defender in the league on his day and the impact he has on those around him is unparalleled in this team, that goes for silva, yaya and kun...

I'd love to have him in every week but we need to be looking at viable alternatives now also, but if he can be managed to play 25/30 games a season then not only do we win the majority he plays, we win trophies!!

I can't go back over all the threads where I'm likely to have seen that judgement, but I'm not making it up. You don't forget stuff like that. I was amazed to see it on a City forum, believe me.

"Or maybe he is just not considered as starter by Pep, because he thinks Otamendi/Stones/Kolarov amout to a better solution? I mean Kompany must have trained half the hours with the team as them three did, and we all know how quite obsessed he's with instilling his ideas to players on the training pitch"

Ok, I decided to be arsed and have a sift back through this very thread. This from about fifteen pages back, no more. It doesn't say it explicitly, but it comes close enough to implying it. Kompany can understand every single thing that Pep might ask of the defence, better than any of those mentioned. The only issue is the one of his enduring fitness. It is a huge question mark, let's not kid ourselves about it. But if…

Arsenal have the much better attack so I'd be tempted to use him in the cup, especially if the rags drop points against Chelsea or/and Burnley.
Well looking at the way this pile of shit is going, I'd now definitely be saving him for the derby. As much as I'd like to win the cup, the idea of losing a six pointer against united during the run in is horrific. Plus I think we can beat arsenal without him.

Maybe. A lot depends on Stones' fitness. If he's fit for Arsenal I wouldn't mind resting Vinny as much.

Perhaps if Vinny gets through 4 or 5 games unscathed by the end of the season and then completes pre season without any problems, Pep might take a chance on him. But I can't help thinking that if there's any question mark at all about his fitness Pep will refuse to take the risk. Once bitten twice shy.

I think his stature within the club will see him stay if he wants to

Don't know why we would even consider getting rid of Kompany......
If he is fit he plays....simple

Vinny and Ota from here on.

I still think Otamendi is a strange player.

He can have those games like he did yesterday, but has followed them many a time, even with Vinny next to him if I remember correctly, and looked a Championship defender.
