“Medical reasons” confirmed as a knee injury, or at least according to the MUEN. Not thought to be serious, but then they said that about Sergio who will have been out for pushing 8 weeks by the time he’s fit again. Good news that it’s not his calf, but it’ll be a surprise if he’s risked ahead of the World Cup

If he doesn't play again this season, he'll have started 20 of our 54 games; last season he started 15 out of 56. He's entering the last year of his contract as well, I think, so it makes sense to get someone younger, perhaps de Ligt from Ajax.

Always easier in theory to contemplate letting Vinny go than in practice, because as he’s shown again over the course of the last 3 months, he remains far and away our best defender. He’s comfortable enough on the ball to pass the “Pep test”, and when it comes to the old fashioned attributes of heading, blocking and knocking opponents off the ball, he’s well ahead of Stones, Otters and Laporte. Oh, and he’s a proper captain and a magnificent ambassador for the club as well

Yet at the same time, our best run of form arguably came when the onus fell on Stones and Otamendi; I suppose they too can only flourish when they believe that they have the long-term trust of the management and that they will get the nod. Difficult one, because as you point out he still offers more on and off the pitch. Not suggesting we let Kompany go now, simply that we plan for that time.

Kompany seems to be back training with the group, according to the latest official video (May 3rd), so maybe he'll feature at the weekend.

Yeah he's back for this weekend, wouldn't be shocked if they didn't want to risk him last game so that he'd be able to captain the match that we lift the trophy after.
