Virgil van Dijk

I dont want to turn this into a Denayer thread.....but,he's certainly not the player we witnessed emerging from our EDS,or on loan at Celtic. The fitness thing can be easily salvaged but not if the attitude is wrong, which i would guess is the underlying issue.

When comparing his mentality, and current standing,to a player like VVD,Denayer is light years away.

They were emerging as a potential top class partnership & both should have been playing for us, then, imo.

Yes. VVD would do the 'big bloke' stuff, attacking the ball, Denayer would sort it out whenever Van Dijk did something Otamendish. Denayer was the smarter & faster of the two.

Also some of his tackles/clearences under immense pressure almost defied gravity.

The guy at Sunderland was a wheezing lump, who looked like he'd smoked a spliff in the dressing room.

Wonder about his mentality. Not seen a lot of Denayer but remember seeing him for a Celtic game (think it was in Europe) and he was not in the game at all. Just a shadow of a player. Pretty much cowardice the way he was coasting along hiding even though they were being attacked. Whenever I saw him for Sunderland it wasn't a lot different - coasting around, trotting aimlessly, way off the pace

It looks like he's got into the wrong company if you you go off that video of him kicking that guy on the ground.

Strange because I saw himin a european game & he was running the defence,on his own, because Van Dijk did two Otamendi's & got sent off. I think it was away at Milan.

And I saw all the other UEFA games & can't recall the one you saw.

Was it his euro debut ?

Could have been yea. Don't think it was against a big team IIRC. Fairly sure it was early on in his time there and as you suggest possibly his first game, maybe a qualifier? Remember the other team on the edge of the box trying to score and him just not engaging with any of the players

Just read that Chelsea are back in for him, looks like Southampton don't want to sell to Liverpool, I understand as it would make them look like fools.

Praying we jump in for him. VVD and Sanchez will make us CL contenders.

How many centre backs do Chelsea need?
They've got Cahill ,Luiz, Azpilacueta, Rudiger sent out Zouma on loan who liked excellent and sold Ake because they couldn't promise him the game time.
Now I know they need more depth this season because of CL but surely not at centre back.
