Virgil van Dijk

When I heard this story in the car emerging and they mentioned £75m I was relieved it wasn't city. Imagine the publicity if it had been us breaking the world record for a defender. I prefer the way we do business these days, not going for the marquee signings.
Also well done to Liverpool's owners. They have backed the manager in fixing a position that was badly in need of fixing. It shows their ambition, but It's a huge amount to pay, although I doubt they will attract the level of criticism for paying stupid money as we would.
Also there are parallels in the way this transfer has evolved, with the Sterling transfer. Again, I doubt there will be the same furore. Different standards apply to players who join Liverpool, than leave them.

I’d have liked him but £75m shows which team wanted/needed him more. No doubt we’ll get about 4 players for that price in the summer. 2CB, Sanchez and DM.

For all those scousers who think he joined Liverpool because he rejected City and twice the pay etc etc blahfkin blah....

"Liverpool's desire to sign Van Dijk comes through the size of the fee, which Manchester City - who were also interested - were not prepared to match"

Where was that statement from. I can't see it on Saint website??

With VVD and Keita next season they are building a very good squad, whether they can gel as a team remains to be seen.
Pep has turned City into a team greater than the sum of its parts, which is saying something.

Bottom line VVD gone to Liverpool because Liverpool matched the fee Southampton wanted and what we were not going to do.
