VPN Advice - (2020 pg12)

I use a separate VPN on the router then I can simply decide which devices go through it.
The Amazon Firestick & Roku box for streaming football & sport go through it as does
my lap top. But not my wife's or sons machines and non of our phones.
It just gives me the flexibility and privacy that I like.
I believe that your browsing data should be totally private for a variety of reasons and not sold on
for profit or used for other reasons. Eventually a lot of organisations will have full and complete access
to your browsing & on-line usage data. As will the government and they will implement a 'reward / punishment'
system for its citizens similar to what has already happened in China with 'Social Point's system (below).

At that point the Internet will have gone full circle and will be the ultimate 'Big Brother'.
It's not far off it now but I want to resist to the death! ;-)

Wasn't that an episode of Black Mirror?

Minor question really. I’ve just got NORD VPN but can no longer get Amazon on my iPad or iPhone although I still can when I switch VPN off. Is this a common problem and is there any way to fix it?

Switch the VPN off.

See my post on the previous page, it's a DNS issue, google play hasn't been working for some time with NordVPNs DNS servers and recently amazon have followed suit. Basically amazon web addresses aren't resolving through NordVPN's servers which they advise you to use in every setup tutorial they have as they are private DNS servers which they control.

They are working on a solution but there's no ETA, so for now the workaround is either switch it off when you want to use Amazon or play or change the DNS while they hopefully find a solution. It's an easy fix to change the DNS whether you use the Nordvpn app(advanced settings) or router(basic setup) but comes with the problem of having to find and trust a free public DNS which claims not to log.

I was going to suggest quad9 but I don't trust the DNSleak result so I've opted for Cloudfare's 1.1.1.1, they've promised not to log data and any ip logs deleted after 24hrs.

Not sure I'd trust anything that came with Chrome after all Google tracks everything you do.

Dont get this
Why pay when there free ones on Chrome ?
I use TouchVPN, works great.
Plugins like touchvpn only work with a browser, other applications like p2p won't be routed through their servers. A paid service usually allows Netflix and iplayer geo-unblocking too.

Thanks for your reply. Much appreciated.

Hi all

I’m a complete useless twit when it comes to anything that involves more than pushing a button.

I’m currently using a firebox with various apps but lost now there is no more terranium tv.

I’m interested in getting myself a VPN but no idea where to start. IP vanish seems heavily promoted.

Would really appreciate some advice on what my fellow blues use or recommend

I'm no expert either, but it is my basic understanding you want a company that keeps no records and is located outside of a 5 Eye/9 Eye nation. (Though I've heard on the street the intelligence sharing between the 5 eyes has been scaled back, dramatically, as of late, budt i don'tknow that as fact.)

There are so many VPN services now, including free and non-free ones. I recommend you to start from the free one for the first time, just choose and install any VPN plugin you like, downloading and installing them is very simple, I don't think that even in your case it can be a problem :) Such plugins are really helpful and easy to use too but they're also usually worse in case of speed/locations choice/security than the non-free ones so if you're planning to use VPN really often I think it's better to install a paid one, besides they have much better quality in general.
In this case before making a choice you need to decide for what certain purposes you need such service, its qualities (and they can vary greatly!), type of platform for it (not all of them can be used for all platforms), variety of locations you want and type of interface (it should be simple and user-friendly). For example, as the best ones in this case are considered NordVPN, KeepSolid VPN Unlimited https://www.vpnunlimitedapp.com/en , CyberGhost, Hotspot Shield https://www.hotspotshield.com/vpn-offer/, ExpressVPN, PrivateVPN and so on.
