He’s probably so highly rated because in most walks of life you are judged in comparison to your direct competitors. It’s odd really because in a stereotypical way you’d think a holding midfielder would be a thing England would naturally excel at producing. But who are the alternatives to Rice, and Philips when fit?

Rice is class

box to box midfielder, tough tackling, breaks up so many attacks, can spray long passes and if he played more advanced would score more - for those that only see him the odd game from England fair enough not to see what i see as a Hammers ST holder.

The team he should start (assuming everyone is fit) is:

Pickford

Walker
Stones
Slab Head
Trippier (beats Shaw because of his set pieces)

Rice
Bellingham

Foden
Maddison
Grealish

Kane

If I see Mason Mount in the line up, I might watch the Iran v USA game instead.

Quite a few leaks saying this is the team...
Pickford: Walker, Stones, Slab, Trippier: Rice, Henderson, Bellingham: Foden, Kane, Rashford
Not sure what to make of that if true

I've seen a similar lineup but with Mount in place of Bellingham and Sterling instead of Rashford.

He'll probably play Foden wide in a defensive team so he is isolated and plays shit, just to prove a point.

Mount in place of Bellingham could be possible, we know Mount got his surname due to his what he does to Gareth.

I could see Rashford instead of Sterling though. They’re both favourites of Southgate but I think he’s comfortable swapping them with each other, even though both have had 2 decent club games since august

Doesn’t matter much anyway because once the knockout stages start, Foden will be back on the bench

In fact, that’s when we will revert to a back five, so there will be even on less space for an attacking player, which means Foden’s chances are even more limited after this game.

The reality is unless Wales beat us 4-0, we’re through. That’s highly unlikely, so he can stick for Foden in this game to quieten people down before sticking him back on the bench next game.

If Phil is really wanting to play, then he better enjoy this game, because after this his time will be extremely limited

I know I'm biased but I really think Jack even in his few minutes on has looked really good. I wish he could play a more midfield role vs. wing.
