It's more subtle than that though. If the defender deliberately plays the ball back and you nip in and get it, then you can't be offside. But if both players go for a ball played by an attacker, the defender gets to it first but it falls to the attacker and he scores, then that's offside, because the attacker was still going for the original ball forward from the attacker.

does the attacker have to be intending to strike/play the ball however? what if sterlings next touch was to control the ball...he certainly didn't intent the ball to come off him and go into the net...he may have intended to either shoot, control or pass with his first touch but I'm guessing any of those options means he was offside?

Im sure there will be a major investigation with loads shouts of "justice needs to be done" with a distinct Scouse whine that can be heard!...it will get louder if Burnley get something tomorrow!

interfering with an opponent by:
• preventing an opponent from playing or being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the opponent’s line of vision or
• challenging an opponent for the ball or
• clearly attempting to play a ball which is close when this action impacts on an opponent or
• making an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball or
Sterling was guilty of all 4 to be fair.
